ERA-Chair: Striving for excellence in forest ecosystem research

Project description

Structural changes for forest sustainability and stability

Climate change impacts forest ecosystems, and forest ecosystem research (FER) plays a critical role in ensuring the resilience and stability of these ecosystems. The EU-funded EXCELLENTIA project aims to establish an exceptional interdisciplinary research team dedicated to FER. This initiative relies on the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology (FFWT) at Mendel University in Brno. FER researchers will investigate the effects of climate change on European forests and strategies for maintaining their sustainability and stability, while assessing the likelihood of tree mortality. This research prioritises sustainable research and innovation practices, intellectual property rights, research data management accountability and scientific ethics. EXCELLENTIA will focus on the study of central European forests, using the UFE Masaryk Forest in Křtiny for research.

Objective

The objective of the project ERA-Chair: Striving for excellence in forest ecosystem research (EXCELLENTIA) is to create an excellent interdisciplinary research group engaged in Forest Ecosystem Research (FER), under outstanding scientist Professor Douglas L. Godbold at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology (FFWT) Mendel University in Brno (MENDELU). He will be a scientific leader guiding FFWT structural changes and transferring the faculty into a modern and accountable institution. The structural changes include, i.e. implementation of sustainable research & innovation, accountability in intellectual property rights and research data management, and codification of scientific morality in practice and career guidance. The FER researchers will focus on climate-driven change in European forests, the sustainability of their functions, methods to ensure forest stability in the following decades, and the tree predisposition to death. In addition, the FER group will study the effects of predicted future climatic scenarios on Central European forests. EXCELLENTIA will use the enormous potential of the Training Forest Enterprise (UFE) Masaryk Forest in Ktiny, a long-term research site. Some of the research plots at UFTE were established in 1973, and tree growth data has been measured continuously, which has led to unique datasets.
Prof. Godbold will be head of the FER Research Group which will have the same status as the other Departments at the FFWT. This enables high autonomy in defining scientific themes and approaches in research. EXCELLENTIA will be built on the data availability, previous research investments and the research programme developed at the FFWT.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
