Deliverables
This report will map innovative business models for and around online platforms in the music sectors. It will provide a two-step business model analysis: a quick-scan analysis to map all main business model features of all main types of stakeholders (creators, distributors, (playlist) curators, etc.); and an in-depth analysis of at least 6 online platforms’ business models.
Music industry perspectives on fairness in Europe (opens in new window)This report explores how music composers, performers and music industry actors understand and address fairness in the music industry. In particular, it will analyse both the European level and the national ones. At the European level, the focus will be on six key European associations: DIGITALEUROPE, DOT Europe, European Live Music Association, European Music Council, European Composer and Songwriter Alliance and IMPALA. At national level, the focus will be on the eight EU consortium countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, France, Greece, Portugal and Italy.
Music creators’ rights under EU law (opens in new window)This study on music creators’ rights in Europe will consider (i) the implications and practical repercussions of the principle of fair and transparent remuneration embodied in the 2019 Copyright Directive; (ii) new licensing structures for user-generated content platforms, based on Art. 17 Directive 2019/790; and (iii) the role of national legal systems in the eight consortium countries with the aim to assess the effectiveness and degree of transparency of online music licensing solutions and of the related rights management information for music creators and all music right-holders.
Triangulation of data from collecting organisations/platforms, broadcasters, and users (opens in new window)This report will show how platforms and their algorithms influence musical platforms. The report will provide a literature review focused on the influence of algorithms in the music field, with a focus on the consumption side. This review includes literature in computer science, information science, cultural economics, cultural policy and communication sciences. The report will place special emphasis on all aspects that can impact platforms' fairness and how we can mitigate the negative effects of algorithms on cultural diversity and inclusion.
Project Handbook (opens in new window)This document includes a Quality Plan; a description of the liaison and interaction with the European Commission; and the organisation of Review Meetings as scheduled.
Report on Dissemination and Communication activities, including impact assessment (opens in new window)This report will provide a summary of the project's Dissemination and Communication activities, including an impact assessment of its Key Exploitable Results (KERs) and of their reception by stakeholders. These results will form a solid baseline to describe and evaluate the project's delivery of a wide variety of materials for dissemination and public outreach.
Origins, goals, and effects of EU law and policy in the online music sector (opens in new window)This report on the origins, goals, and effects of EU law and policy in the music sector will help the project team finalise a comprehensive study on music creators’ rights (D2.2).This report consists of a thorough, yet concise, investigation of the state of composers’ and performers’ rights under EU law, considering their scope also as it emerges in the EU case law. It will collect and analyse national transpositions and samples of contractual practices that reflect the implementation of EU-wide rights of individual authors and performers to access data on profits that all online music platforms derive from their different types of music exploitations.
Policy Brief No. 2 (opens in new window)This second Policy Brief will summarise key, evidence-based recommendations formulated in the White Paper.
Policy Brief No. 1 (opens in new window)This first Policy Brief will synthesise the analyses conducted in WPs 2-4 and key research results provided by these WP leaders.
Roles of EU competition law and regulation across online music platforms (opens in new window)This report will assess the function of competition law and regulation in Europe’s online music ecosystem. First, the report will shed light on the role of the EU Commission (acting as the EU antitrust authority) in investigating and sanctioning potentially anticompetitive practices of music platforms and of the largest tech companies. Second, it will investigate the potential impact of EU regulatory measures on digital music markets, especially when it comes to individual creators’ and small and medium-size producers’ access to (i) data regarding the exploitation of their works; (ii) licensing and remuneration opportunities across platforms; and (iii) dispute resolution procedures.
White Paper on Fairness in Music Ecosystems (opens in new window)This report will identify solutions and will contain policy recommendations to help EU policy makers promote fairness not only towards music professionals but also for stakeholders and society at large. This goal includes solutions and proposals dealing with the role of online platforms in terms of promotion of Europe’s cultural and linguistic diversity as well as gender equality. This Paper will assess the implications of data-sharing schemes that new music licensing and copyright enforcement mechanisms, such as the ones being implemented at national level in response to Article 17 Directive 2019/790, are likely to create throughout the project development.
Value Networks in the music sector (opens in new window)This report will provide an analysis of Value Networks in the music industry, and of their evolution over the last 20 years. To map these networks and the inter-relations between actors, the report will identify: (i) the value chains and related activities; (ii) different stages in the value chains that compose the Value Networks (including content creators, content developers, distribution and placement, support environment and support industries); (iii) different actors (both generic names and actual examples of key players) in a process of stakeholder mapping.
This Roundtable will be a side event organised during the final conference. It will address multiple stakeholders and representatives from the music industry as well as policy and decision makers. The event will aim to establish close synergies with relevant EU-funded projects and initiatives, creating opportunities for cross-fertilisation.
This demonstrator will provide a Music Data Dashboard of statistical indicators on the European music sectors, with a view to informing policymakers and music professionals. These indicators include current statistical sources of data on music at EU and national levels with the aim to analyse statistical shortcomings in current sources, notably regarding online music consumption and revenues. The identified data as well as the structure and the objectives of the Dashboard will be validated also on the grounds of the findings of a Co-Creation meeting with policy makers.
Music Copyright Infrastructure (opens in new window)This deliverable will be a law and technology concept formulated by researchers and industry experts in order to identify and rank solutions to the problem of information asymmetry across online platforms in Europe. The deliverable will be based on the research output produced in WPs 2, 3 and 4.
Fairness Indicators (opens in new window)The demonstrator will provide indicators about the fairness of the algorithms used by platforms. By understanding how algorithms are working and how they influence users, the demonstrator can highlight variables that can be efficient in reinforcing platforms' fairness and help establish a sustainable music ecosystem.
Fairness Score for Platforms (opens in new window)This proof of concept will help evaluate pros and cons of the various models that have emerged in Europe and globally (cf. WP3). Based on data built by the project through the findings from WP2, WP3 and WP4, the “Fairness Score” will enable users to explore and visualise different aspects of fairness of the collected datasets.
Scoring musical platforms and social media (opens in new window)This demonstrator will shed light, through quantitative and qualitative methods, on patterns of exposure in terms of bias and diversity in playlists from popular music platforms (e.g. streaming services and music video services). This analysis will rely on data being provided by industry partners SIAE and VeMi; platform users donating their playlists; qualitative interviews with a selected number of users, broadcast editors and playlist curators.
This cluster of activities will aim at facilitating knowledge transfer from Fair MusE to composers’ and performers’ collecting societies, labour unions and other organisations (including educational establishments) representing and helping music creators in their careers across Europe. Based on the knowledge created in WP2, UCP and ICONS willoffer an open-access web-based training programme, where participants will be able to access blog posts, view online pre-recorded videos and attend live-streamed webinars and Q&A sessions.
