Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

The Green Marine team will develop retrofitting protocols and solutions to enable the future of shipping to be energy and fuel efficient, capture the carbon it emits to deacidify our oceans and have closed air circulation systems that are virus free. To aid the different stakeholders a software tool catalogue will be made that gathers knowledge on these and other solutions. We will demonstrate these tools and the innovative solutions onboard a ship from Calmac in Scotland.
The project objectives are summarised below:
• Develop and validate retrofitting protocol tools suitable for adapting engines, flue gas carbon capture and utilization, and integrated energy saving solutions for water borne vessels.
• Develop and validate a software tool containing an up-to-date catalogue of suitable solutions for a wide variety of ship types and operation scenarios. The software tool is to aid decision making.
• Tailor a (nano)particle and virus removal solution suitable for gaseous steams. Demonstrate its use by allowing virus-free air-reuse in enclosed areas saving significant HVAC energy use. To utilize this new pre-treatment technology to significantly reduce OPEX costs of carbon capture technologies in flue gas streams.
• Tailor commercially available gas-gas separating membranes for CO2 and water capture. Utilize waste heat with thermoelectric elements and combined with a unique catalyst to produce a CO and H2 rich syngas.
• Develop and implement a carbon capture solution based on an alkaline solution with Ca- and Mg form sea water. Resulting products are precipitated calcium carbonates (PCCs). Also, the produced minerals can be dis-charged into the sea for the purpose of deacidification.
• Replicate project learnings to all stakeholders; Stimulate software tool use and further enrich its data; Cooperate with global marine community of ship owners, operators, shipyards and equipment providers.
• Firmly position our retrofitting, software tools as a sustainable solution. Offering a realistic and competitive new alternative in the Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) market.

The Green Marine consortium, coordinated by the Cyprus Marine & Maritime Institute (CMMI), brings together 10 partners from industry and academia from all over Europe. All partners share the vision of providing the wider maritime community and industry with effective and efficient ways of onboard retrofitting solutions leading to decarbonize the maritime industry. The duration of the project is 4 years extending from February 2023 to January 2027.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

Notable achievements of Green Marine:
- Identification and Selection of a Ro-Ro vessel from CalMac Ferries for demonstrations, namely MV Coruisk
- Detailed HAZOP/HAZID analysis of proposed Green Marine technologies to be demonstrated on-board MV Coruisk
- Identification and rental of appropriate space at Petronav Shipmanagement LTD (allocated subcontractor in Green Marine) premises within the Port of Limassol to host the land-based measurement campaigns
- CMMI, in order to facilitate the project land-based campaigns (unforeseen action), identified and procured a marine genset with similar specifications to the identified auxiliary engine on-board MV Coruisk
- Design, engineering and lab-based testing of core Green Marine technologies, namely: 1) Carbon capture via membrane pathway (SINTEF), 2) Carbon capture via chemical absorption (CCM), 3) SepaRaptor for flue gases (SMP/WPS), 4) SepaRaptor with UV (SMP/WPS) for killing viruses/bacteria and sterile immunity, 5) ThermoElectric Element for energy harvesting (SMP/WPS), and 6) preparation of catalyst regeneration
- Definition and finalisation of Process Flow Diagrams (PFD) per technological solution (chemical absorption and precipitation, membranes with SepaRaptor, TEE) including the marine genset
- Assessment via desktop analysis and surveying the available literature and eventual exclusion of syngas on-board production (including corresponding pathways to produce CO and H2) and eventual re-injection in the auxiliary engine for the candidate vessel chosen (MV Coruisk)
- CMMI initiated the design of a bypass actuation system (which will act as a flue gas override system and to provide flue gases of 50 -150 Nm3/hr to the Green Marine technologies) (unforeseen action) to comply with safety requirements requested by CalMac
- Planning of land-based measurement campaign activities for the project and eventual demonstration on-board the vessel in accordance with its dry-docking schedule
- Development, continuous monitoring and updating of KPIs and end-system requirements
- Preliminary modelling of core Green Marine technologies; including CFD calculations of bypass actuation system, process modelling, lifecycle assessments, technoeconomic evaluations etc
- API definition needed for the software tool catalogue
- Development of Project Management Handbook and Data Management Plan
- Regular monthly meetings to promote WP interaction, scientific and technical support with an emphasis on RRI and Quality Assurance as well as engagement of all consortium partners to leverage multidisciplinary expertise to find solutions and how to move forward
- Hosting of internal workshops to educate etc Green Marine technology developers regarding Class and Flag rules and requirements in terms of risk assessments
- Synergies with other EU funded projects; namely RetroFit55, HyEkoTank, and Alliance4XR
- Setup of the project website (https://greenmarine-project.eu/) and social media accounts (LinkedIn; https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-marine-project/ and YouTube; https://www.youtube.com/@GreenMarineproject) with large activity and setup of a project email address ([e-mail])
- Creation of project video and 360o video of the forward and aft engine rooms and the ventilation room. The 360o video is available to view via CMMI’s VR headsets
- Attendance to Conferences, Workshops, Exhibitions and other events to promote Green Marine solutions and expected benefits to the shipping industry
- Publication and release of flyers, newsletters and press releases

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

The project is still at its early stages, more concrete evidence regarding Green Marine’s activities in contributing towards the call’s anticipated impact will be provided.
