Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

The HYSTORE project aims to advance thermal energy storage (TES) technologies to enhance energy efficiency, integration with renewable energy sources and enable demand-response through sector coupling. The project's primary objectives include developing innovative TES configurations tailored to specific heating/cooling and domestic hot water needs, reducing system costs, simplifying installation processes, and extending TES applications to grid services for enhanced energy flexibility. By leveraging state-of-the-art technologies and intelligent aggregators, HYSTORE seeks to transform TES from an auxiliary service to a central component of building energy management, providing comfort and supporting grid stability.

The project is structured around five pillars: technical development of storage and control systems, system integration, validation through demonstrators, and exploitation and business model creation. Each pillar addresses specific gaps in current TES technologies, ensuring high energy density, low CAPEX, and ease of integration with existing energy systems. HYSTORE's comprehensive approach aims to achieve significant impacts, such as reducing design and installation efforts by 50%, achieving energy cost savings of at least 15%, and enhancing grid stability through innovative TES applications.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

During the initial reporting period, significant progress has been made across various work packages. Key achievements include the development of the ICT toolset for TES systems, which emphasizes modularity and interoperability. Deliverable D4.1 "First reports on HYSTORE tools design," outlines the design of software and hardware components necessary for the project's ICT infrastructure.

Moreover, advancements in TES configurations have been made, with the focus on achieving higher energy density and reducing CAPEX. The project has also seen the development of innovative TES solutions, such as the ALL-IN-ONE PCM solution for heating, cooling, and DHW. Initial tests have shown promising results in terms of efficiency and performance.

The project's risk management plan has been established, ensuring continuous monitoring and mitigation of potential risks. This plan includes a comprehensive risk register that tracks and addresses risks throughout the project's duration.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

HYSTORE has achieved several results that push the boundaries of current TES technologies. The development of high-performance TES systems with energy densities up to 150% higher than the state of the art, and CAPEX reductions of up to 50%, represents a significant technological breakthrough. The project has also focused on creating secure federation schemes for TES integration within local energy communities, enhancing self-consumption and peak load reduction capabilities.

To ensure further uptake and success, HYSTORE identifies key needs such as continued research, demonstration projects, market access, and supportive regulatory frameworks. The project's innovative TES configurations and intelligent aggregator systems position it well for commercialization and widespread adoption.
