The FlexCHESS project proposes cutting-edge solutions based on the digital twin concept, Virtual Energy Storage Systems (VESS), and Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) to revolutionize existing energy storage practices. By aggregating Connected Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (CHESS), FlexCHESS aims to improve grid stability while increasing the profitability of installations by guaranteeing various ancillary services at both distribution and transmission network levels.

The primary objective of FlexCHESS is to create an open network of VESS to facilitate the integration of clean energy into the existing grid system, benefiting both consumers and the climate. The project will develop the FlexPlatform, a comprehensive digital twin engine, to support decision-making and the integration of new assets. Additionally, FlexCHESS will democratize access to hybrid energy storage systems through the CHESS-Plug, offering high interoperability and optimal representation of the VESS portfolio. By leveraging DLT, FlexCHESS will enhance flexibility trading, ensure traceability, and reduce intermediaries.

The value of FlexCHESS lies in guaranteeing a strict green VESS and minimizing energy curtailment by ensuring transparency and traceability of stored energy, alongside information sharing while protecting private data. The project embraces creativity and innovation to deliver flexibility services and the best practical outcomes, ultimately enhancing the innovation storage capacity and competitiveness of smart grids in Europe.

During the first 18 months, the FlexCHESS project has successfully met all its stated objectives and delivered all required deliverables. A significant accomplishment lies within Work Package 1 (WP1), where the consortium effectively defined the Requirements and Specifications of FlexCHESS solutions tailored to the specificities of each pilot site, alongside developing realistic use cases and scenarios. Substantial technical work has also been achieved under Work Packages 2 and 3, yielding satisfying preliminary results. The development of an interoperability layer, as well as various tools for predicting production and consumption, the Energy Management System (EMS), and a real-time digital twin, stand out as key technical advancements. These efforts collectively advance the project's goals and demonstrate robust progress across multiple fronts.

FlexCHESS aims to push the boundaries of current energy storage and management systems. The project introduces a novel VESS concept, which increases the flexibility and efficiency of energy storage systems. The integration of digital twins, smart contracts, and blockchain technology will enhance transparency, traceability, and democratize access to energy management tools. The expected impacts include significant CAPEX and OPEX reductions, higher returns on investment, and shorter payback periods, making the system economically viable and attractive for stakeholders.
