Taking blood apart by sound

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - TAPAS (Taking blood apart by sound)

Reporting period: 2023-05-01 to 2024-10-31

In medicine, certain procedures call for specific components to be isolated from whole blood: examples of such procedures include platelet donation or isolation of T cells for immunotherapy. Conventionally, this isolation process is performed using centrifugation, a process requiring specific instruments that renders the process of blood re-infusion into the patient rather difficult. The TAPAS project proposes to develop an alternative methodology based on acoustic separation that relies on differences in density and size of the different blood components. Researchers will test the selectivity of the approach and its impact on the structure and function of the different blood components.
In the project we investigated (1) how selectively sub-groups of blood cells can be separated by acoustic separation, (2) an acoustic separation be scaled for high throughput applications, and (3) can acoustic separation affect blood cells?
