Project description
Demonstrating innovative cache exploitation in real networks
Caches, temporary storage locations that speed data load times, are particularly useful for video content. Downloading and temporarily storing video-on-demand (VoD) content enables users to seamlessly watch content that might otherwise lag or be interrupted when playing directly from a cloud-based server. Network operators exploit caches to reduce the tremendously high VoD fees involved in delivering video content to their clients. Funded by the European Research Council, the LIGHT project aims to develop and test new algorithms for their innovative method of exploiting caches to boost network performance, enabling practical realisation in networks. The methodology has the potential to significantly lower infrastructure costs in Europe by enabling the use of cheaper base stations with fewer radiofrequency chains.
Objective
Communicating video-on-demand (VoD) over various networks is very costly. VoD drives up the costs for purchasing bandwidth and overprovisioning infrastructures, as well as the costs to content providers (Netflix, Amazon, etc.) that must pay large fees to network operators to deliver content to their clients. To reduce the massive VoD fees, networks employ caches. Our findings in our ERC project DUALITY reveal a new method of exploiting caches that boosts the performance of various networks. We wish to explore the practical ramifications of these findings in practical networks. This project will explore the algorithmic and testing work needed to render these ideas practical.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
