Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

The LEGOFIT project aims to design, implement and validate an advanced and dynamic integrative approach to accomplish EPH based on smart and innovative solutions with a high scalability and replicability for building construction and renovation, through: i) developing an innovative holistic design platform that encompass not only passive and active technologies but also their integration for smartest exchange of information and interoperability of systems based on Building Information Modelling (BIM), available for both professionals and end-users, ii) integrating active and passive strategies (e.g. envelope, HVAC systems, integrated solutions, including nature based solutions, etc.) with smart management technologies (BAS, BMS) for climate neutral and high energy building performance providing maximum flexibility to users iii) investigating innovative routes for promoting minimum environmental impacts by the smart use of solid and liquid residues generated during building life cycle stages and iv) fostering sustainable stock of buildings by guaranteeing not only the fulfilment of sustainable criteria (economic, social, environmental) but also according to the enhancement of smart readiness of buildings. This innovative and integrated approach is demonstrated in 3+ demos across a range of geographical, cultural and construction stages/technological market maturity scenarios. The building typology focus is the residential sector, multifamily houses and dormitories, including both new and existing constructions. The involvement of professionals in the sector is ensured through the development of a community of stakeholders and an open innovation community for Building Energy System (BES) professionals. Training courses focused on the new EPH approaches will ensure a new generation of multidisciplinary team of experts on the topic.
The LEGOFIT project began in May 2023 and will run until 2027. It focuses on designing and validating advanced, scalable solutions to achieve Energy Positive Homes (EPH) and transition to Positive Energy Districts (PED) through both new building construction and the retrofit of existing buildings. The project aims to integrate passive and active technologies within a comprehensive design platform that uses BIM to facilitate seamless information exchange and system interoperability. LEGOFIT ensures climate neutrality solutions and also, high energy performance solutions via AI and machine learning technology. Additionally, the project explores sustainable approaches to reduce environmental impacts, particularly by utilizing residues generated throughout the building lifecycle, contributing to the creation of a sustainable building stock that meets environmental, economic, and social criteria.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

As of 2024, significant progress has been made, including the completion of the foundational work for the integrated design platform. The LEGOFIT platform is designed to simplify the process of implementing EPH and PED by providing a comprehensive, user-friendly tool for both professionals and end-users. It enables the exchange of technical and non-technical solutions, supports smart decision-making, and ensures interoperability across various systems. The successful establishment of the LEGOFIT Stakeholders' Community has fostered collaboration among public authorities, technology providers, and other key actors. BIM and Virtual Energy (VE) models for several pilots are nearing completion, while others are still under development. Moving forward, LEGOFIT focuses on ensuring the scalability and replicability of its solutions, training a new generation of multidisciplinary experts, and achieving climate-neutral, energy-efficient buildings across diverse European contexts, with a target completion in 2027.
The LEGOFIT project's greatest technological innovation in achieving a positive energy balance is the LEGOFIT platform, an integrated design platform that blends passive and active technologies utilizing Building Information Modelling (BIM). Thanks to the LEGOFIT platform, the modelling of high performance and cost effective active and passive technologies, the LEGOFIT marketplace offers to the users an extensive range of commercially available solutions, specifically chosen by the LEGOFIT technical experts. This platform provides smooth information sharing and system compatibility, giving users simple access to technical and non-technical solutions for improving building energy efficiency. By providing decision-support tools, the platform reduces the pre-construction process and ensures a smoother transition through each project phase. Furthermore, the platform's agile development methodology enables constant contact with stakeholders, allowing for incremental solution enhancements. Additionally, the use of Urban-Scale Model Integrated Digital Twins (USEM-DTs) ensures scalability and the ability to simulate potential energy outcomes at a district level, supporting the development of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs). This combination of advanced tools and smart management solutions has been critical in optimizing energy performance and driving the transition to energy-positive buildings and districts.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

The LEGOFIT project is set to achieve a range of significant impacts aimed at improving construction processes and enhancing energy efficiency. Key objectives include a reduction in construction and renovation time by 30-50%, depending on the pilot site, and a substantial decrease in the performance gap between the design and operational phases, with a target reduction of up to 80%. The project aims to achieve an average energy consumption reduction of 146 kWh/m²/year across the five pilot sites and ensure the fulfillment of all control parameters for each pilot. Additionally, LEGOFIT plans to deliver a turnkey process, supported by a user-friendly platform to facilitate decision-making. The use of local materials and components will be prioritized, with a target of 20% of components being reused from deconstruction. A marketplace for active and passive technology models will be established, and the project seeks to achieve a reduction of 15.4 kgCO2eq./m²/year in emissions across the pilot sites. Furthermore, the project aims to increase occupant satisfaction and interest, propose improvements to certification procedures (e.g. VERDE, GBC ES), and create a Digital Building Logbook to support efficient building management.
