TACKLING ANTIBIOTIC OVER-PRESCRIPTION

Project description

A boost for personalised antibiotic treatment

In the dynamic realm of healthcare diagnostics, researchers are spearheading a transformative initiative. Annually, hundreds of millions individuals seek medical attention for urinary ract infections (UTIs), necessitating precise antibiotic prescriptions. Yet, pinpointing the ideal treatment proves challenging, exacerbated by surging antibiotic resistance rates. In this context, the EU-funded OVER-AB project is designing a point-of-care diagnostic tool. Empowering physicians, this innovation permits swift assessment of the effectiveness of antibiotics prior to administration. Results are swift, precise, and tailored, augmenting treatment efficiency. The project’s pioneering spirit champions a future where personalised patient care reigns. As a female-led initiative, it is also inspiring women to embrace entrepreneurship with unwavering passion and determination.

Objective

Within the ever changing and ever innovative field of healthcare diagnostics, ShanX Medtech and Dr. Sophia Eriola Shanko are dedicated to bringing personalised diagnostic testing to the point-of-care, ensuring the timely and appropriate administration of antibiotics to patients.

Worldwide over 400 million people visit their doctor with a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) every year. With the majority of UTIs stemming from a bacterial infection, the treatment thereof is straightforward: an antibiotic prescription. However, for physicians determining the correct antibiotic treatment for each patient remains problematic. Furthermore, the global increase in antibiotic resistance rates reinforces the need to improve antibiotic prescription protocols. ShanX is developing a diagnostic tool that can be used at the doctor's premises and it allows the physician to test a series of antibiotics prior to administration, thereby ensuring the subsequent treatment efficacy. The results provided are fast, accurate, and tailored to each individual patient.

ShanX Medtech is revolutionizing the antibiotic treatment workflow by enabling fast, evidence-based and personalized antibiotic administration.

Sophia is proudly building a world where women, like herself, are defining and designing a better future for patient care. She hopes that her positivity and charisma serve as an inspiration to others, and that – while leading by example – true passion paired with determination and grit, can empower women to meet their potential and pursue entrepreneurship.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
