Project description
Sustainable biomaterials-based textile production method
The textile industry stands out as one of the most polluting sectors. However, a significant shift towards biomaterials has opened the door to sustainable and circular textile production. The EU-funded NEF4SCALE project has introduced a New Fashion Factory (NEFFA), a 3D sustainable automated manufacturing method that produces custom-fit textile products from biomaterials. The NEFFA method commences with the production of a mycelium-based material known as MYCOTEX. This unique process involves growing mycelium, which is the root structure of mushrooms, using liquid fermentation. NEFFA's approach not only provides unprecedented design freedom but also operates in a circular manner, eliminating waste along the way. This revolutionary manufacturing method marks a step forward for environmentally-friendly textile production.
Objective
NEFFA is the first sustainable automated manufacturing method to create custom-fit textile products from biomaterials, starting with MYCOTEX. First, we grow mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms. We use liquid fermentation and only work with food grade ingredients. Then the mycelium is filtered, mixed with ingredients and pigments and robotically applied around affordable, recyclable moulds. After drying and finishing the product is ready to be worn. We can grow AND make the product from scratch within only 7 days.
This patented process gives you unprecedented design freedom to create silhouettes and textures that were never possible before with traditional manufacturing processes, all while guaranteeing a perfect fit. We offer a supply chain based on automation and make local and on-demand production possible. And it is circular as our method is based on natural materials and the elimination of waste.
With this project NEFFA is looking to increase their business opportunity in order to become the next manufacturing method next to cutting & sewing. It is based on 3 parts. The first part is focusing on reaching fast fashion pricing, the second part on creating larger products and the third part is on business development and training when approaching male dominant companies and investors.
