EMOFACE

Project description

Innovative tools for autistic people

Access to healthcare, education and employment stand as crucial Sustainable Development Goals established by the UN in 2015. The development of social skills is pivotal for achieving these goals, particularly for individuals facing challenges in social interaction. The EU-funded EMOFACE project seeks to support autistic individuals by integrating AI technology with the enhancement of social skills. The initial application, Emoface Play&Learn Emotions, provides engaging activities involving interaction with 3D avatars to enhance socio-emotional skills. These skills encompass recognising emotions in various contexts, expressing and managing emotions, and comprehending others’ intentions. These tools are adaptable to meet the diverse needs of autistic individuals across different ages and developmental stages. The Women TechEU programme can play a significant role in supporting EMOFACE.

Objective

Access to health, quality education, and decent work are among the Sustainable Development Goals established by the UN member states in 2015. A key indicator for these dimensions is the development of social skills. For populations with deficits in social interaction, developing social skills is an ongoing and necessary task to ensure the well-being and social inclusion. EMOFACE offers a solution with high social impact, linking artificial intelligence technology and social skills development.

EMOFACE is developing applications and training services to support autistic people throughout their lives. Our first application, Emoface Play&Learn Emotions, proposes playful activities in interaction with 3D avatars in order to train socio-emotional skills such as: recognizing the emotions of others out of and in context, expressing and managing emotions, and understanding the intentions of others.

The curriculum and visual content used to illustrate emotions and social situations are adaptable to the users' needs so that our tools can accompany autistic people independently of their development and age. Our adapted design has been tested on non-verbal kids to adult autists with or without intellectual deficits. Our tools address both families and health practitioners, allowing them to easily share information about the improvement in socio-emotional skills, using our methodology that proposes objective measures in order to facilitate skill evaluation and even pre-diagnosis.

Women TechEU program can help respond to the biggest challenges faced by EMOFACE in short and mid-term. The activities I plan to support with the EU grant involve operational and strategic activities in relation to international development and validation of pathway to reimbursement plans. The program would also benefit coaching from international mentors with various expertise and the access to networks of expertise for growth and expansion to international markets and busi

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
