Periodic Reporting for period 1 - INHERIT (Next Generation Solutions for Sustainable, Inclusive, Resource-efficient and Resilient Cultural Heritage)

Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

O1 – Co-creation with stakeholders: Approximately 400 stakeholders across 15 Social Labs and workshops co-designed the INHERIT approach using participatory methods, contributing local knowledge and priorities, which led to the successful delivery of Milestone 3 and Deliverables D2.1 and D2.2.

O2 – CH assessment and solutions framework: A comprehensive KPI-based framework (D3.1) was developed across four thematic pillars, complemented by normalisation and prioritisation methodologies, while 40 tailored and peer-reviewed solutions were defined, with ongoing work to assess their cost-effectiveness.

O3 – ICT platform for CH management: The first version of the ICT platform and data-sharing services was delivered (D4.1) now being enhanced through UI/UX improvements based on stakeholder feedback, and already provides valuable CH insights through its accessible and functional design.

O4 – Pilots for testing and validation: Seven pilot sites have been prepared through detailed methodology and execution plans (D5.1 D5.2) including sensor deployment and user identification, to test, monitor, and refine INHERIT solutions based on real-world conditions and feedback.

O5 – Capacity building and replication: The capacity-building programme integrates mentoring, peer-learning visits, and e-learning development, with key skills identified, policy engagement initiated, and replication activities scheduled to start post-M22.

O6 – Dissemination and exploitation strategy: A full strategy (D7.1) and supporting materials—including the “Library of KERs,” local desks, and communication tools—have been established, while IPR and exploitation activities are underway with a dedicated webinar and partner engagement.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

Key Achievements:

-Engaged over 400 stakeholders from diverse sectors through 15 co-creation activities, ensuring inclusive input into the design of the INHERIT approach.

-The Technical Inspection Protocol covering essential inspection procedures for foundations, facades, installations, biodegradation, accessibility, and functionality is over halfway complete, with 55% progress, demonstrating solid advancement towards comprehensive heritage building assessment.

-The Assessment Framework has significantly exceeded expectations, with 36 indicators developed against a target of 15, reaching 240% progress, enhancing the project's ability to evaluate energy, resource efficiency, resilience, and social sustainability comprehensively.

-Built a hub of over 40 tailor-made measures, peer-reviewed and thematically structured, offering practical, cost-effective solutions for sustainable, inclusive, and energy-efficient CH sites.

-Delivered the first release of the ICT platform, along with the INHERIT Assessment Tool and 10 digital services.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

Social Science Framework and multi-stakeholder knowledge exchange for sustainable, inclusive, resource-efficient and resilient CH (KER1)
By Month 18, 389 stakeholders (48.6%) participated in 15 co-creation sessions (60%) out of the targeted 800 stakeholders and 25 sessions.
All 8 planned use cases (100%) have been successfully co-designed, addressing both building-scale and city/neighbourhood-scale challenges.

Technical inspection protocols for heritage buildings’ more efficient and sustainable (re)use (KER2)
Three technical inspection protocols have been developed, exceeding the target of one and covering all key aspects of CH building assessment.

INHERIT Monitoring & Assessment Framework and dashboard, aligned with 4 key dimensions (KER3)
The assessment framework includes 36 indicators, more than doubling the target of 15, across energy, resource efficiency, resilience, and inclusiveness dimensions.

INHERIT Hub of measures inventory for cost-effective and less disruptive modernisation of CH sites (KER4)
An inventory of 40 tailor-made solutions has been compiled, significantly surpassing the target of 15 measures for CH buildings.

Data Space compliant platform for heritage buildings smartification & data exchange (KER5); INHERIT design and renovation services, incl.interactive screen use and AR-VR interfaces, modelling and simulation environment, and decision support tool for optimal renovation planning (KER6); INHERIT monitoring, operation and management services, incl. IEQ & thermal comfort optimisation, forecasting & flexibility management, Digital Twin for heritage facilities, and activity & mobility patterns (KER7); INHERIT preservation and maintenance services, incl. H-BIM, GIS-based solutions and environmental climate scenarios at city level (KER8)
Only 2 of the 10 services have reached TRL 5 so far, while the Data Exchange Platform is now operational and available for partners to start using. The remaining services, grouped into three categories, are in continuous development and have progressed to a stage where refinements are being made to the user interface and user experience (UI/UX).

Capacity building programme for durable, yet flexible transformation and energy resilience of communities built around CH assets and policy recommendations towards a sustainable built environment (KER9)
This is still at a very early stage, so by Month 18 we had not yet achieved any concrete results.
