International Doctoral Training in Mathematical Sciences in France

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - MathPhDInFrance (International Doctoral Training in Mathematical Sciences in France)

Período documentado: 2023-12-01 hasta 2025-11-30

Mathematical sciences play a key role in today's economy, but also in shaping the solutions to the many societal and scientific questions we will face in the world of tomorrow. France has a long tradition of excellence in mathematical research and education, covering a wide variety of topics from the most theoretical ones, including fundamental computer science, to the very applied ones linked to biology, physics, chemistry, medicine, finance, image processing, data sciences, artificial intelligence, geophysics, urban development, social sciences, etc. A significant proportion of French mathematicians are located in the Greater Paris Region, which also attracts most international students, despite the excellence of mathematical institutes, and the richness of the scientific spectrum everywhere in the country.

The programme MathPhDInFrance, carried by FSMP (Fondation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris covering most math laboratories in downtown Paris) and associating partners from Greater Paris and everywhere in France, will propose an innovative concept of doctoral training, where each student is co-supervised between the Greater Paris region and another region in France. The programme MathPhDInFrance aims at structuring the research and training of doctoral students in Mathematics in the entire France territory by proposing an innovative scheme where each student is offered two host laboratories where to conduct research, while following extensive and appropriate training.

The program will structure the research and training and strengthen the international visibility of French Mathematical research while proposing an enriched collaborative experience to the students stimulated by the double environment of co-supervision. Overall, the project will thus contribute to building and shaping the French Mathematical community and ensure its integration into Europe and the rest of the world.
In the first period of the programme (December 1st, 2023-November 30th, 2025) the work has been mainly devoted to communication, dissemination, evaluation, and selection activities to complete at the best the recruitment of the 48 PhD students through two calls. In November 2024, the first "Transferable skills and career workshop" was organized by FSMP and directed to the 23 fellows of MathPhdInFrance from Call 1. It has been decided to organize a specific training course with our partner, Association Bernard Gregory (ABG), to help them understand the difficulties of a doctorate and develop good practice in their day-to-day work. In addition, particular emphasis was placed on the definition of the PCDP and on the career opportunities following their doctorate. In December 2025, the second "Transferable skills and career workshop" was organized by FSMP and directed to the 23 fellows from Call 1 and the 24 from the Call 2. ABG organized 4 workshops :
"Preparing your international mobility" - "Understanding the role of intercultural competence in a professional setting " - "Designing your career plan ' and "Successfully navigating your PhD". Others sessions and workshops were dedicated to careers in higher education and research in France, Open Science or how to address to a general public.
MathPhDInFrance will mark another milestone in our more than a decade-long efforts to exploit the extraordinary potential of the Greater Paris - and now the French Mathematical community that maintains close links to its values of excellence in research, academic freedom, training and career prospects. It aims at stimulating regional/ national doctoral programmes with international goals to structure research and fosteIt aims at stimulating regional/ national doctoral programmes with international goals to structure research and foster excellence in recruitment, mobility and career development of promising young Mathematicians. The co-supervision scheme will moreover foster collaborations between Mathematicians from Paris Region and the rest of France, and will allow the fellows to benefit from complementary scientific environments. Indeed, it is expected that the doctoral programme will make emerge new ambitions, mindset changes towards more mobility and curiosity, a greater awareness of the impact of Mathematics in the new economy, a greater taste for risk, innovation and entrepreneurship, yielding regional, national and international socio-economic benefits and strengthening significantly research human resources.
