Project description

Creating the leaders of future electronic-based system research

Electronics and electronic devices play a critical role in the majority of technologies, impacting various sectors and fields. Therefore, studying them, as well as electric components, systems, or their interaction with software, is essential for driving revolutionary advancements. The MSCA-funded CRYSTALLINE project aims to cultivate the future leaders in electronic-based system (EBS) research. Collaborating with three Austrian universities, the project seeks to develop a comprehensive EBS research portfolio. This portfolio will span from electronic components to devices using micro- and nanoelectronics, extending to designs at the system or system-of-systems level. The project aims to provide participants with access to international academic and industrial networks, contributing to the advancement of their careers, perspectives, and experiences.

Objective

The mission of CRYSTALLINE (eleCtRonic-based sYSTems reseArch exceLLence IN Europe) is to train junior scientists (JSs) as future leaders in Electronic Based Systems (EBSs) research. Teaming up with three Austrian universities and drawing on their individual curricula, the Silicon Austria Labs (SAL) will offer JS positions in its entire EBS research portfolio scope, ranging from electronic components, via devices drawing on micro- and nanoelectronics, up to designs at the system or even system of systems level – and where electronics and embedded software meet to form the technological backbone of digitalization. The JSs becoming full SAL employees and being fully embedded into SAL’s research environment, CRYSTALLINE will offer them a global picture of EBS research perspectives and connections to SAL’s (inter-)national academic and industrial innovator network. For fostering their career development, the research topics will be fully aligned with the regional academic and industrial technology clusters’ agendas, with SAL’s three sites across Austria (Graz, Linz, Villach) multiplying the options available to the JSs. Complementing our dedication to research, we will train the JSs in essential transferable skills like communication, (project) management or ethics, and will offer secondments in our international network. Scientific forums, summits, social activities and networking days will be just some of the means in CRYSTALLINE to propel excellence and evolution in our JSs’ studies.
In the proposed 60-month MSCA-COFUND action, we plan to attract 2 cohorts of 9 JSs for 48-month PhD studies. Via this action, we will be able to improve on our critical mass and our impact on EBS research at the highest level of scientific excellence. CRYSTALLINE will foster a brain-gain by attracting international talents to join the SAL network, and in turn international scientists can benefit from our SAL environment that unites academic excellence with industrial entrepreneurship.
