The achievements are described for each objective stated above.
OBJECTIVE 1 – Build and develop an EU - USA Next Generation Internet (NGI) Landscape Framework.
Achievements in period 1:
• While the project did build an audience and community of interest, in terms of developing an ultimate landscape framework, as the open calls never started, it wasn’t possible to progress this objective in full during the first period apart from the building of a community via the Twinning Lab (see objective 3).
OBJECTIVE 2 - Realise EU - USA Open Calls and provide financial support to third-party projects.
Achievements in period 1:
• The project team worked on the development of new solutions and enhancement of existing tools for the holding of the EU – USA open calls. It was going to require new tools and procedures since the NSF were taking a larger role in the evaluation activities of the open call projects, which would require a new joint approach to carrying out the EU – USA calls.
• Many workshops were held with the NSF to identify and align of funding mechanisms in EU and USA for the open calls and to discuss and develop the NGI topics for the transatlantic open calls of NGI TRANSOCEANIC. Taking on board the results of the stakeholder identification activities from objective 1 and 3, the project team was keeping the potential stakeholders in the loop on the availability of upcoming open calls.
• While the agreements were being worked on and being processed between the EC and NSF, the project worked closely with the European Commission and the NSF to build out the timelines of the open calls to suit the timelines of the NSF schedules. This involved the planning of three EU - USA three open calls of 18 months duration each with a minimum open time of 2 months as per the Horizon Europe guidelines.
• The work carried out in this objective was mainly carried out in WP3 and is captured in D3.1. Open Call Handbook.
OBJECTIVE 3 - Twinning activities and support services for the EU - USA stakeholders.
Achievements in period 1:
• The project developed and recruited for the EU – US Twinning Lab Platform as an innovative digital communication channel encouraging dialogue and exchange of information for networking between potential partners leading to EU – USA consortium building.
• The project encouraged the NGI communities to register at the Twinning Platform to be prepared for the opening of the Open calls.
• This contained contact information and information about the potential partners being sought for EU – US projects.
• The definition of the Twinning Lab Activities and support services was undertaken in T2.1 (D2.1).
OBJECTIVE 4 - To ensure maximum impact and sustainability of the EU - USA NGI activities, and to promote the standardisation and industrial application of the NGI TRANSOCEANIC results.
Achievements in period 1:
• As the open calls never started, it wasn’t possible to progress this objective in full during the first period.
