Periodic Reporting for period 1 - XR5.0 (Human-Centric AI-Enabled Extended Reality Applications for the Industry 5.0 Era)
Reporting period: 2024-01-01 to 2025-06-30
XR5.0 will:
• Develop an innovative, person-centric XR approach tailored to Industry 5.0 manufacturing,
• Integrate human-centric digital twins and advanced AI (such as explainable and generative AI) to personalize XR experiences for workers,
• Focus on adherence to key European values by designing for trustworthiness, privacy, security, and compliance with regulations,
• Deliver and demonstrate six high-impact pilot applications for training, maintenance, product design, assembly support, and troubleshooting in real manufacturing environments,
• Contribute to the EU XR platform, ensuring broad accessibility and scalability,
• Build a dynamic stakeholder community to drive the adoption and sustainability of XR5.0’s results. In this way, XR5.0 will help position Europe as a leader in human-centric digital manufacturing, promoting worker well-being and industrial competitiveness.
Architecture and Methodology:
- Developed a comprehensive XR5.0 architecture model using ArchiMate, providing a modular, scalable backbone aligned with Industry 5.0 goals.
- Mapped architecture to leading industrial standards (e.g. RAMI 4.0 IIRA, OpenXR), demonstrating strong consistency with recognized frameworks.
- Created three actionable solution blueprints, covering XR training with biometrics, security (OAuth 2.0) and end-to-end training workflows.
Human-Centric Digital Twin and Adaptive Interfaces:
- Delivered digital twin technologies for real-time user state monitoring and environment adaptation.
- Released a wearable companion app (Android) and enhanced the Clawdite platform for practical use in pilots.
- Developed adaptive user interfaces following the new XR5.0 protocol, including behavior- and preference-based content display.
AI Integration and Human-AI Collaboration:
- Advanced neuroscientific AI, explainable AI (XAI), and Active Learning for transparent, interactive human-AI collaboration in XR.
- Deployed a generative AI-powered chat engine in XR for intelligent, context-aware assistance and maintenance.
- Created robust APIs for XR/AI/data exchange and real-time AI visualizations for anomaly detection, decision support, and training.
XR Training and Pilots:
- Evaluated and mapped traditional training to XR formats.
- Advanced the XR5.0 Training Platform architecture, enabling structured, modular, and remote training programs.
- Designed scalable, adaptive training models for diverse industry needs.
Major breakthroughs include highly realistic digital twins that adapt in real time to each worker’s abilities, preferences, and condition—ensuring safe, personalised, and GDPR-compliant XR experiences. XR5.0 uniquely integrates technologies such as explainable and neurosymbolic AI, active learning, and generative AI for intuitive training, maintenance, and operational support.
The project introduces novel multi-modal interfaces—combining menus, voice, gestures, and conversational AI—making advanced XR tools accessible for all workers, including non-experts. Its configurable, AI-powered training platform tailors content to different profiles and environments, supporting rapid upskilling and safer workplace operations.
Currently undergoing validation in real industry pilots and built for broad adoption, XR5.0 aims to empower European enterprises and workers, boost innovation, and position Europe as a leader in trusted, human-driven XR for manufacturing and beyond.
