The XR5.0 project emerges in response to the increasing use of Extended Reality (XR) technologies—such as virtual, augmented, and mixed reality—in digital manufacturing. While XR has already improved production quality and worker safety, today’s solutions often adopt a “one-size-fits-all” approach, overlooking the unique needs, skills, and contexts of individual workers. As Europe moves towards Industry 5.0—a new era focused on human-centric, trusted collaboration between workers and intelligent machines—the limitations of generic XR applications become clear. Industry 5.0 demands XR tools that are not only technologically advanced, but also respect European values like privacy, security, and data sovereignty.
XR5.0 will:
• Develop an innovative, person-centric XR approach tailored to Industry 5.0 manufacturing,
• Integrate human-centric digital twins and advanced AI (such as explainable and generative AI) to personalize XR experiences for workers,
• Focus on adherence to key European values by designing for trustworthiness, privacy, security, and compliance with regulations,
• Deliver and demonstrate six high-impact pilot applications for training, maintenance, product design, assembly support, and troubleshooting in real manufacturing environments,
• Contribute to the EU XR platform, ensuring broad accessibility and scalability,
• Build a dynamic stakeholder community to drive the adoption and sustainability of XR5.0’s results. In this way, XR5.0 will help position Europe as a leader in human-centric digital manufacturing, promoting worker well-being and industrial competitiveness.
