Strategic Energy Technologies Plan Annual 2023 Conference in Barcelona, Spain

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - SETPlan 2023 (Strategic Energy Technologies Plan Annual 2023 Conference in Barcelona, Spain)

Período documentado: 2023-04-01 hasta 2024-01-31

The EU's Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan:
1 . Supports the development of clean, efficient and cost-competitive energy technologies through coordination and collaboration in clean energy research and innovation (R&I), bringing together European industry, academia and governments of the SET Plan countries
2 . The SET Plan has played a central role in implementing the research, innovation and competitiveness dimension of the Energy Union
3 . It has had a structuring effect on joint R&I actions, helping them deliver on common energy research objectives with greater speed and effectiveness.

Through its 14 implementation working groups 12 (IWGs) and related European Technology and Innovation Platforms (ETIPs), the SET Plan activities have focused on the six priorities of the Research, Innovation and Competitiveness dimension of the Energy Union. This section takes stock of the SET Plan’s achievements and identifies new directions.

While the 17th SET Plan Conference organised under the patronage of the Spanish Presidencty of the Council of the EU brings continuity to an event that has taken place since 2008, it is organised in the context of a revamped SET Plan(expressed in the Communication of October 20 COM/2023/634 final) on the new priorities and cross-cutting issues. It will contribute to collectinng inputs so the SET Plan´s objectives, governance structure and IWGs are revised in such way that can make a greater contribution to the European Green Deal, REPowerEU and the Green Deal Industrial Plan goals.
The work done by FECYT in cooperation with the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation(MCIN) and DG RTD, DG ENER and the JRC of the European Commission has focused on designing and executing a meaningful conference that can contribute to the implementation of the priorities of the revamped SET Plan.

In order to do that, extensive financial and human resources have been allocated by FECYT to this conference. While the content of the sessions included in the programme are mostly designed by the EC and MCIN, FECYT has focused in efforts in making the conference happen.
Once the venue of the event was chosen(Atrium of Viladecans and adjacent buildings) FECYT worked in close contact with the local authorities in order to identify the logistics needs associated and coordinating efforts with other local agents.

FECYT was also in charge of coordinating the travel arrangements with the speakers of the conference(which in this case counted up to almost 80), designing and updating the conference website, organising the social dinner, liasing with suppliers and overseeing the rest of the activities related to the logistics of the conference.
The result of the work done by FECYT, MCIN and the European Commission was a 2 full-days conference with a intense and diverse programme that aimed to capture all the outstanding issues related to the SET Plan. The conference included sessions of different formats, from discussion panels to interactive session, where attendees had a chance to make their own contribution.

The outcomes of the conference have been published in the website of the event, and will be the cornerstone of the 18th SET Plan Conference, organised in 2024 under the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU.
