Designing a European Brain Health Landscape

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - CSA BrainHealth (Designing a European Brain Health Landscape)

Reporting period: 2023-11-01 to 2024-10-31

The Coordination and Support Action (CSA) BrainHealth is preparing a European Partnership on BrainHealth to structure research and innovation in this area. The project started on November 1st, 2023 with a runtime of 24 months. Funded by the European Commission, it builds the umbrella for 21 participants from 11 countries. The CSA BrainHealth addresses policy-makers and funders from European Member States, Associated and Third Countries, and other stakeholders, in close interaction with the research community. A wide-ranging and diverse CSA BrainHealth network is created including the Funders Forum, the Stakeholders Forum, and the Scientific Advisory Board to support the development of the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) in preparation for the future European partnership on BrainHealth. This European Partnership will holistically approach the biomedical, economic, and societal challenges in the field of brain health in Europe and worldwide, aiming for collaborative and innovative solutions for preservation and improvement of brain health, as well as prevention, diagnosis and therapies for neurological and mental disorders.
During the first peroting period all boards and the collaborative framework were established. Frequent consortium meetings served to align and finetune the work within the work packages effectively. The first General Assembly (GA) of the Coordination and Support Action (CSA) BrainHealth took place on May 14, 2024, in Berlin, Germany and online. The meeting gathered 73 participants representing the CSA Brain Health partners, funders forum members (i.e. national funding agencies and ministries) and representatives from the European Commission Directorate General Research and Innovation (EC DG-RTD). The assembly aimed to provide an overview of the progress made towards the future European Partnership for Brain Health. Thus the first GA of the CSA BrainHealth was an opportunity to successfully foster a collaborative environment, allowing participants to provide critical feedback and share insights, and engaging with key stakeholders from the community. The GA marked an important moment in the journey towards a successful EPBH, setting the stage for future achievements and collaborative success. In July 2024, the proposal draft for the European Partnership for Brain Health was published by the European Commission.
As concerns a sustainable structure suited to fulfil the scope and aims of the potential EP BrainHealth. In a WP-overarching workshop, the results of WP2 were synchronized with those of WP3, WP4, WP5 and consented with the Funders Forum (WP1). This consolidation step resulted in a concept describing the governance, partners, scope, and objectives of the EP. It will be the basis for drafting the EP BrainHealth proposal by WP2- and all other partners. The Commission Services were consulted during drafting to facilitate alignment with the overall EU political ambition and Strategic Planning of Horizon Europe and com-pliance with the common criteria for Partnerships. The aim was to achieve consent regarding EU priorities, as well as openness, coherence and synergies with other rel-evant EU initiatives (including missions). The results were consented with the Funders Forum (WP1).

With the publication of the draft EP BrainHealth proposal, deliverable 2.1. was achieved, and was uploaded to the EC portal. With the publication of the SRIA, deliverable 3.1. is achieved, and was uploaded to the EC portal.
