Pipeline for Rapid Diagnostics of Emergency Transboundary Infectious Diseases

Project description

A boost for global readiness against potential pandemics

The ease of global travel and shifts in our environment have accelerated the spread of infectious diseases of zoonotic origin, presenting a critical challenge to global health security. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the urgent need for rapid diagnostics in controlling disease outbreaks. In this context, the EU-funded PREPARE-TID project addresses this urgency. Targeting various infectious agents, it aims to develop rapid diagnostics for emerging epidemics, neglected diseases, and elimination efforts. With a diverse consortium of 16 European and four international organisations, including SMEs, PREPARE-TID combines expertise in biomedicine, epidemiology, veterinary science, and software engineering. From mobile sequencing labs to point-of-care diagnostics, it is a holistic approach to preparedness, offering innovative solutions for cross-border health threats.

Objective

It has become apparent that the ease of travelling, global warming, and changes in the environment accelerate the spread of infectious diseases of zoonotic origin. International collaboration is essential to impact on the control of disease epidemics, and as the COVID pandemic has shown rapid diagnostics are one of the main pillars. PREPARE-TID will target infectious agents of three types: an ongoing neglected epidemic, an ongoing emerging epidemic, and an ongoing elimination drive. The aim is to develop the necessary in vitro diagnostic tools for preparedness needed in case of the emergence of infectious agent X. PREAPRE-TID is a multidisciplinary research consortium drawn from 16 European and 3 international research organisations and SMEs. Biomedical researchers will work alongside epidemiologists, clinicians, veterinarians, and software engineers to implement a pipeline from a mobile suitcase sequencing laboratory with a simple bioinformatics to a fieldable rapid nucleic acid extraction procedure, a mobile smartphone linked molecular point-of-care and a multiplex PCR one-health surveillance platform, and a one health digital platform. These will provide innovative diagnostic solutions for cross-border health threats at international level. PREPARE-TID will increase the accessibility to novel diagnostics for detection of pathogens with pandemic potential. The consortium will deliver point-of-care and mobile diagnostics, which can be easily deployed and mass produced in case of an epidemic or pandemic.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
