Port of Hirtshals and the CONVEY Project: Implementing the Green Transition

Background and objectives
The CONVEY project aims to establish an integrated, sustainable hydrogen ecosystem at Hirtshals Port. By utilizing local renewable energy from offshore wind turbines, the project will produce up to 550 tons of green hydrogen annually. This hydrogen will be used in heavy transport and industry, while by-products such as excess heat and oxygen will be utilized for additional industrial purposes.

Hirtshals Port’s contribution
As a key partner, Hirtshals Port has provided the necessary land for the establishment of Norwegian Hydrogen’s production facility. In addition, the port has contributed expertise in infrastructure and logistics, which has been essential for the project’s progress.

Achievements to date
Since the project began, significant progress has been made. Design and planning phases have been completed, including the development of digital energy management systems and securing necessary permits. Construction of the hydrogen production facility and related infrastructure is now underway.

Expected impact
The CONVEY project will not only support the green transition in Hirtshals but also serve as a model for other ports across Europe. By integrating hydrogen production with existing infrastructure and utilizing local renewable energy sources, the project demonstrates an effective and sustainable approach to energy transition.
Technical Activities Performed

Provided land and prepared the site for Norwegian Hydrogen’s green hydrogen production facility.

Contributed technical expertise in infrastructure planning, including logistics and integration with the port’s existing operations.

Main Achievements to Date

Commencement of construction of the hydrogen production infrastructure.

Integration of the port’s logistics and infrastructure planning with project requirements to ensure operational feasibility.

Establishment of frameworks for future monitoring of production efficiency and safety protocols.

Outcomes of the Activities

The site is now ready for the implementation of hydrogen production operations.

Technical collaboration has ensured that the project design aligns with both the EU’s energy transition goals and local operational needs.

A foundation has been laid to demonstrate a replicable and sustainable green hydrogen ecosystem at a commercial port.
Innovative Results

- The project demonstrates a novel integration of green hydrogen production with existing port infrastructure, combining renewable energy from offshore wind with industrial and transport applications.

- Development of digital energy management and monitoring systems that optimize efficiency and safety in large-scale hydrogen production.

- Establishment of a replicable model for a sustainable hydrogen ecosystem at a commercial port, including storage, distribution, and use of by-products such as excess heat and oxygen.

Potential Impacts

- The project can accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen in heavy transport and industry, contributing to the EU’s climate and energy transition goals.

- Provides a blueprint for other ports and industrial sites across Europe to implement similar sustainable hydrogen systems.

- Promotes innovation in port logistics and energy management, potentially influencing regulatory and standardisation frameworks at national and European levels.

Key Needs for Further Uptake

- Continued research and demonstration to scale up hydrogen production and optimize operational efficiency.

- Access to markets and financial support to facilitate commercialisation of green hydrogen solutions.

- International collaboration and standardisation to enable cross-border hydrogen transport and integration into larger energy networks.

- Supportive regulatory frameworks to accelerate adoption and ensure safety, quality, and interoperability.
