Port of Hirtshals and the CONVEY Project: Implementing the Green Transition
Background and objectives
The CONVEY project aims to establish an integrated, sustainable hydrogen ecosystem at Hirtshals Port. By utilizing local renewable energy from offshore wind turbines, the project will produce up to 550 tons of green hydrogen annually. This hydrogen will be used in heavy transport and industry, while by-products such as excess heat and oxygen will be utilized for additional industrial purposes.
Hirtshals Port’s contribution
As a key partner, Hirtshals Port has provided the necessary land for the establishment of Norwegian Hydrogen’s production facility. In addition, the port has contributed expertise in infrastructure and logistics, which has been essential for the project’s progress.
Achievements to date
Since the project began, significant progress has been made. Design and planning phases have been completed, including the development of digital energy management systems and securing necessary permits. Construction of the hydrogen production facility and related infrastructure is now underway.
Expected impact
The CONVEY project will not only support the green transition in Hirtshals but also serve as a model for other ports across Europe. By integrating hydrogen production with existing infrastructure and utilizing local renewable energy sources, the project demonstrates an effective and sustainable approach to energy transition.
