REmanufacturing, repurposing and recycling energy goods through advanced Mechatronic and Digital technologies

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - R3-Mydas (REmanufacturing, repurposing and recycling energy goods through advanced Mechatronic and Digital technologies)

Reporting period: 2024-01-01 to 2025-06-30

Remanufacturing products is an effective means for transitioning to a more circular economy. However, there is a pressing need to improve the traceability and reliability of final products from the end-users' perspective, as well as to enhance impact monitoring.

R3-Mydas integrates innovative digital technologies (ML for process and quality control, marketplace, graph models for defects detection, digital twins), advanced mechatronics (AM, laser-cladding, automated disassembly/reassembly), and newly developed techniques from social sciences and humanities (extended TAM/UTAUT models, ethics and legal framework), to facilitate sustainable circular value chains for remanufacturing energy goods. It aims to bring about significant functional, environmental, and economic improvements in remanufacturing at the factory level.

R3-MYDAS proves the reliability and replicability of remanufacturing through the development and validation of three demo cases, targeting the following energy goods: (1) Oil&Gas crankshafts; (2) E-vehicles batteries; (3) Wind turbines gearboxes. R3-Mydas aims to deliver unprecedented impacts throughout the targeted value chains, as follows: up to 60% time reduction in programming for remanufacturing; up to 20% increased product quality; up to 30% rework reduction [Demo 1]; up to 30% improved detection of tiny deviations from normal behaviour; up to 50% faster anomaly localization; up to 30% increase the number of different modality data streams handled; up to 20% faster fusion process [Demo 2]; up to 99% reusage rate; -90% prevention rate; -75% lead time; up to 85% raw material savings potential [Demo 3].

R3-Mydas targets to improve the impact of remanufacturing by: developing a framework towards standardization and transferability; evaluating the environmental and socio-economic impact; facilitating acceptance by end-users and workers; improving supply chains; and studying ethics and liability issues.

R3-Mydas will deliver a marketplace for both remanufactured products (with Digital Passport-like set of information) and services for remanufacturing, facilitating full traceability. Finally, a dedicated training programme will be designed and delivered targeting the R3-Mydas project remanufacturing value chains (100+ training hours and 100+ diverse stakeholders engaged during the project).
During the first 18 months of the project some main achievements are:
• For the Oil&Gas demo case: significant progress on simplifying the crankshaft repair process through a digitally driven methodology and on optimizing the laser cladding process and materials.
• For the e-vehicle batteries demo case: comprehensive stakeholder and lifecycle analysis, novel single-shot State of Health estimation approach, automatic system for assembly/disassembly.
• For the wind turbine gearboxes demo case: significant progress on improving the remanufacturing at various points (ring gears, journal bearing).
• A first systematic assessment of environmental and socioeconomic impact for the 3 demo cases.
• A first version of the marketplace supporting EV batteries, while specified requirements for other cases.

SSH achievements are expected in the second half of the project.
During the first 18 months of the project its results are still under development. Those expected to go beyond the state of the art include:
• Oil&Gas components remanufacturing solution
• E-vehicles batteries remanufacturing solution
• Wind turbines gearboxes remanufacturing solution
• A new marketplace utilizing dataspaces and blockchain
• General, multi-actor framework for remanufacturing of energy goods
• LCA, LCC and s-LCA reports on the R3-Mydas demo cases
• Training strategy and programme

The business plans for the above results (were applicable) are under development.

The R3-Mydas project will also work on other innovative results in its second half which will be included here later.
