Project description
Innovative CO2 capture technology from the atmosphere
Various industries worldwide consume approximately 230 Mt of fossil-based CO2 as feedstock. Given the volatile and escalating prices of liquefied CO2, capturing it from the atmosphere emerges as a logical solution. However, despite the high concentration of atmospheric CO2 contributing to climate change, it constitutes only 0.04 % of the air we breathe, rendering cost-effective capture challenging. In this context, the EIC-funded C-DAC project presents a groundbreaking direct air capture technology developed by CARBOMINER. This innovative approach selectively captures CO2 from the atmosphere using a wet absorbent fibre and regenerates it through a patent-pending bipolar membrane electrodialysis pH-swing process. C-DAC has undergone testing in greenhouses, proving to be a cost-effective alternative to current CO2 supply options.
Objective
CO2 is recognized as the main pollutant responsible for global warming. On the other hand, 230Mt fossil-based CO2 is consumed globally as feedstock for different industries, including greenhouses, fertilizers, carbonated drinks and food preservation.
With volatile and soaring prices of liquified CO2, raising 10x last year (from €200 to €2.000/t) why don't we take it back from the atmosphere and use it as a valuable feedstock? Although high enough to cause climate change, atmospheric CO2 concentration makes up just 0.04% of the air we breathe, low enough to make it tricky to capture cost-efficiently.
CARBOMINER has developed C-DAC as a novel Direct Air Capture technology for selective CO2 binding from the open air in a fully electric and cost-effective process. Based on wet absorbent fiber for CO2 capture and patent pending BPM electrodialysis pH-swing for CO2 regeneration, C-DAC has been demonstrated into greenhouses to bring low-cost fossil-free CO2 vs current CO2 supply options.
