Scaling the largest VPP made of EVs

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - VPPofEVs (Scaling the largest VPP made of EVs)

Período documentado: 2024-04-01 hasta 2025-03-31

As the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) accelerates, concerns about the strain on the electric grid mount. The influx of EVs charging simultaneously poses challenges for grid operators in managing demand spikes and maintaining stability. Without solutions, this could lead to increased grid instability, higher costs for grid management and hinder the transition to cleaner transportation. In this context, the EIC-funded VPPofEVs project develops a plug-and-play virtual power plant. It offers a platform for smart charging, connecting EVs to energy markets. This platform enables demand response and peak-shaving, optimising grid management for distribution system operators and transmission system operators. Using machine learning forecasting, project coordinator Deftpower extracts flexibility from EVs. EV owners benefit by monetising their vehicles for grid balancing.
We have grown our user base further to over 750.000 users while maintaining a stable average rating of 4.7 (out of 5).

All the preparation work of the first 9 months have now resulted in the first smart charging sessions in both Netherlands and Norway. We are able, based on incentives send by the energy market, to optimize the charging session, to calculate the rewards for the EV drivers and to enable the EV-driver to use these rewards to lower there charging bill.

This is an important milestone because we can now show end-to-end that our VPP is real. It will also help to collect more data which then enables us to optimize the algorithms.
