Sukkar aimed to be the first research project to undertake a granular comparative approach to the development of the transatlantic sugar industry during the late-fifteenth and early-sixteenth centuries. The fellow was to combine historical and archaeological research techniques to analyse the agricultural landscapes associated with three sugar factories in Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and the Dominican Republic to ascertain how the colonial agrarian system adapted to each new theatre of colonisation. The contributions of Indigenous peoples in the Canary Islands and Hispaniola to the development of the modern landscapes associated with sugarcane were to be a central element of the project. Sukkar would have helped to elucidate how the Indigenous peoples of the mid-Atlantic adapted to and, in turn, affected the development of the early-modern colonial system and our globalised world. Ultimately, the project strove to raise awareness among local communities and authorities of the importance to preserve traditional agricultural landscapes and practices as cultural heritage.
