Objective
Despite its growth, the shipping sector's sustainability transition lags compared to other sectors. If left unchecked, a 90-130% increase in emissions by 2050 is forecasted with significant socio-economic impacts. Though regulatory changes are emerging, many criticize them for their narrow scope and lack of ambition; lacking a clear approach that embodies ocean, air, and marine ecology preservation. NEREUS-Shipping aims to develop a comprehensive and self-learning decision support system (DSS) based on sustainability, circularity and risk metrics following a lifecycle approach to highlight how short-term operational decisions can affect the long-term sustainability of the vessel. Using the proposed tool, stakeholders will be able to obtain vessel-specific suggestions for risk reduction considering environmental, social and commercial goals. NEREUS-Shipping stands out for its novel approach of integrating tools that were up till now employed in silos within a novel dynamic framework to offer a practical and cost-efficient solution that combines lifecycle assessment, data analytics, risk mapping, and real-time data. This tool will become an effective DSS for identifying sustainability and circularity opportunities while its dynamic nature will allow updating of the metrics using vessel performance and supply chain data.
Under this MSCA program, the Fellow will join one of Europes most advanced teams on Environmental Engineering and Circular Economy (National Technical University of Athens) with further complimentary training in two other EU academic institutes (Technical University of Crete and Technical University of Denmark) and collaborate with industrial partners. During the project the fellow will gain knowledge on sustainability, risk modelling, decision making, cyber-physical systems and digital tools while also expanding his collaboration network. The results will make educational and social impact through engagement with academic institutions and the public.
