Semantic V2X communications: a paradigm shift towards scalable V2X networks

Objective

Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications are key for the transition towards a Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) that is essential to accomplish the EU Green Deal vision of a safer, more efficient, and sustainable transportation. Like any existing communication system, current V2X communications focus on the reliable and timely transmission of signals without considering the relevance of the transmitted information. Such relevance-agnostic approach can lead to the transmission of unnecessary data that will challenge the scalability of V2X networks, especially in light of the increasing amount of V2X data that will be produced and consumed with the mass-deployment of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs). In the SemanticV2X project, we take inspiration from the human language to redesign V2X communications by proposing a paradigm shift that makes the semantics of the information the foundation of the V2X communication process. We will capitalize on the semantic processing capabilities natively available in CAVs to develop a novel set of analytical and numerical semantic models that determine the relevance of the information for the intended receivers considering the target application(s) and leveraging a knowledge-driven representation of the communication context. SemanticV2X will leverage the semantic models to develop a novel semantic and goal-oriented V2X communication paradigm where CAVs curate the transmitted information based on its relevance for the intended receivers. The impact of semantic V2X communications on the scalability of V2X networks, as well as on connected and autonomous driving, will be assessed using a unique and advanced CAM simulator, system-level V2X simulations, and novel semantic KPIs. We estimate that semantic V2X communications can triple the capacity of V2X networks, effectively addressing the massive connectivity demands of CAM and contributing to the realization of its economic and societal benefits.
