Characterization of natural and modified plant nucleotide-based immunity signals as potential agents for crop protection

Project description

Enhancing global food security to combat crop diseases

Crop diseases pose a significant threat to global productivity and economies, undermining food security worldwide. The emergence of new pathogen strains further complicates this challenge, necessitating fresh, sustainable solutions. Backed by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) programme, the NISP project aims to revolutionise plant immunity. Integrating expertise in nucleotide chemistry with functional assays, this initiative endeavours to engineer a potent disease resistance agent applicable across various crops. By leveraging natural defence mechanisms, NISP offers a sustainable strategy to protect agricultural yields and mitigate economic losses on a global scale.

Objective

Disease in crop plants is the major cause of lost productivity and economic hardship globally. New environmentally sustainable approaches for enhancing plant resistance to newly emerging pathogen strains are much needed. Recent studies by the groups of Jijie Chai (at Uni. Köln/Tsinghua University) with Jane Parker (MPIPZ) led to the discovery of four chemically related nucleotide-based compounds that are produced naturally by plants upon pathogen attack to promote immune responses against a broad range of diseases. The biochemical modes-of-action of these small molecules was determined and the chemical synthesis of several pure analogs successfully achieved. These advances provide a basis to (i) explore further the immune-potentiating activities and dynamics of nucleotide-based signals in plant cells and tissues, and (ii) develop and test modified forms of the signaling molecules for increased uptake, bioactivity and stability in plants. The aim of this proposal is to combine knowledge of nucleotide chemistry and modifications (Kath-Schorr) with in vitro and in vivo functional assays (Parker) with a view to designing a disease resistance-potentiating agent with broad efficacy on crops.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
