Project description
Early warning system for floods and storm in the Sahel
A Tropical Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) is a cluster of thunderstorms that collaboratively spread across an entire state and last more than 12 hours. MCSs are the primary source of precipitation in the semi-arid Sahel region. However, their internal structure and dynamics remain unclear. Therefore, the development of a new monitoring system to predict MCSs in the Western African region is necessary. The ERC-funded DakE project will investigate the internal structure and dynamics of MCSs, and develop a new methodology for early warning of floods and storms. This project aims to create a high-resolution automatic weather monitoring system for the Sahel region.
Objective
High-resolution automatic weather monitoring system east of Dakar (DakE) will probe the internal structure and dynamics of tropical mesoscale convective systems (MCS) and design a novel methodology for flood and storm early warning.
