Project description
Introducing innovative technology for needle-free injections
Although needles facilitate the injection of medicines and vaccines, they also have several drawbacks. For instance, needle phobia and the risk of infection from contaminated needles can hinder patient compliance and safety. Meanwhile, millions of discarded needles pollute the environment every day. To address this, the EIC-funded iSENS project intends to develop and market an innovative needle-free injector. Through the use of thermocavitation microjets, the injector ensures that liquids are consistently delivered into the skin, while sensing technology assesses the skin’s characteristics and adjusts the injection to best suit the skin type and treatment area. At the same time, the injection depth and volume are monitored in real time, assuring each dose’s consistency and accuracy.
Objective
Needle-based injections have revolutionised healthcare by providing an efficient delivery method for medications, such as vaccines. However, there are significant drawbacks associated with using needles on a societal, environmental, and technological level. Needle phobia and infection risks can significantly impact patient compliance and safety with medical treatments, while millions of used needles contaminate the environment every day. Lastly, the effectiveness of certain drugs increases when injected intradermally, but targeting the dermis is challenging.
With iSENS, we want to revolutionise the experience of people who receive and perform frequent injections. To this end, we are developing and commercialising a portable and needle-free injector called BoldJet. Our technological breakthrough is threefold:
Needle-Free Injection Breakthrough: We introduce an innovative needle-free injection technology, globally pioneering the use of thermocavitation microjets. Our system excels in the precise and consistent delivery of liquids into the skin's superficial layers, surpassing current state-of-the-art methods.
Smart Sensing Capability: The BoldJet device will incorporate cutting-edge sensing technology, enabling it to assess the unique properties of the patient's skin before each injection. This breakthrough allows for semi-automatic calibration, tailoring the injection parameters to the specific skin type and treatment area.
Real-Time Monitoring and Precision: BoldJet goes beyond conventional methods by offering real-time monitoring of injection depth and volume. This feature guarantees that each dose is administered accurately and consistently.
With our triple technology platform, we will offer a safer, more effective, and minimally invasive injections that do not contaminate our environment. This patient-friendly technology will result in a positive effect on society, allowing millions of people to receive better and more personalised healthcare.
