Hyper-Spectral Laser Induced Fluorescence LiDAR to detect Submerged Oil over Water in real-time on a molecular level.

Project description

Advanced oil-in-water sensor helps protect coastal waters

Coastal undersea environments face serious threats from oil spills and chemical pollution. The EIC-funded OWL project will tackle these issues with the development of the oil-in-water locator, a cutting-edge solution using advanced sensors – hyperspectral laser-induced fluorescence LiDAR sensors. This locator should be able to detect, classify and quantify oil spills and hydrocarbons both on the water surface and at depths. The advanced technology enables real-time, accurate and comprehensive environmental surveillance. OWL could play a critical role in mitigating environmental damage to ensure the safety of our coastal regions.

Objective

Ocean Visuals' project centers on the development and deployment of the Oil-in-Water Locator (OWL), a cutting-edge solution designed to address the complex challenges of monitoring and safeguarding coastal undersea environments. By utilizing advanced Hyperspectral
Laser Induced Fluorescence (HLIF) LiDAR sensors, OWL can detect, classify, and quantify oil spills and chemical pollution -quantifying hydrocarbon presence- both on water surfaces and submerged within the depths. This innovation empowers real-time, accurate, and
comprehensive surveillance, revolutionizing our ability to protect and manage undersea ecosystems, mitigate environmental damage, and ensure the safety of coastal regions.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
