Addressing malnutrition and metabolic health in non-communicable diseases through precision Nutrition: impact in quality of life and prognosis of lung cancer patients.

Project description

Precision nutrition approach to reduce lung cancer progression

Malnutrition significantly impacts many individuals, particularly vulnerable groups such as lung cancer patients. With over 2.2 million new cases in 2020, lung cancer constitutes a global health crisis, affecting quality of life and leading to psychological distress, comorbidities and metabolic complications. The EIC-funded MENTORING project aims to improve the nutritional and metabolic status of lung cancer patients by addressing nutritional deficiencies, restoring the microbiome and developing personalised dietary plans. This precision nutrition approach aims to reduce cancer progression and enhance quality of life. By employing validated multi-omics approaches, the project has the potential to transform healthcare by significantly improving patients’ nutritional and metabolic conditions.

Objective

Malnutrition represents a major burden for a large part of the population and, in particular, for vulnerable population groups like lung cancer patients. Lung cancer is a global health crisis, with over 2.2 million new cases in 2020 and profound societal and economic impacts. Lung cancer patients suffer from reduced quality of life, psychological distress, comorbidities, and the challenges of frequent treatments, as well as malnutrition and metabolic complications.
MENTORING seeks to enhance patients' nutritional and metabolic statuses by targeting deficiencies in macro- and micronutrients and restoring the microbiome and glycomic health profiles. This will contribute to improving the overall quality of life of lung cancer patients, increasing treatment efficacy, and potentially enhancing their survival rates. By combining dietary assessment, nutritional and clinical biomarkers, immune-inflammatory signatures, anthropometry, genetics, glycomics, lung and gut microbiome, and food-related metabolomics, we will develop holistic models able to predict individual responses to personalised dietary plans considering multiple nutritional and metabolic outcomes. This precision nutrition approach will play a critical role in lung cancer care by customising dietary guidance based on an individual's genetic makeup, nutritional assessment, and health status to reduce cancer progression and increase quality of life.
This collaborative effort is tailored to the specific needs of Lung cancer patients, but it has been built in order to make it easily translatable to any other vulnerable population suffering from malnutrition or metabolic impairments. The ultimate goal of MENTORING is to enhance patients' nutritional and metabolic statuses by using validated multi-omics approaches, potentially transforming the healthcare landscape.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
