The aim of BECORI is to organise a Conference on Research Infrastructures during the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in Brussels, at the Royal Library of Belgium (KBr), from 4 to 6 June 2024. The Conference will be a 1,5-day event combined with a half day visit of a research infrastructure (choice between the possibility to visit 3 RIs).
The conference will focus on 3 main issues: 1) RIs as key players of strategic autonomy in a changing global context; 2) the societal and environmental impact of RIs and 3) the broad ecosystems of research infrastructures.
The specific objectives of the conference are the following:
• To gather the RI policymakers, managers, users and stakeholders from EU and beyond around topics of importance for the RI communities, sharing experiences and visions, fostering common understanding among stakeholders, networking and collaborations between actors and through disciplines.
• Reflect on the challenges raised by the global geopolitical situation, how it impacts research infrastructures and how RIs are an important actor/player of the open strategic autonomy of the EU
• Looking at how to maximise the positive of impact of research infrastructure on society at large through open science practices, a better access to RIs for new communities of users (young researchers, SME’s/industry, new disciplines) and reduce the environmental impact of RIs during construction and operation.
• Presenting the Landscape of research infrastructures and exploring the relations with the broader ecosystems, like the generic e-infrastructures, other initiatives as EuroHPC, EOSC and the Data Spaces and new instruments as EDIC;
• Reflecting on the ERIC landscape, challenges and benefits of ERIC
