ARtificial IntelliGence toOl for enviroNmental impact Assessment of bio-based prodUcTs

Project description

Sustainable decision-making for bio-based products

Despite novel innovations and solutions, transitioning to cleaner practices and methodologies has been challenging for many due to the inherent uncertainties associated with adopting and integrating new approaches. This situation has created a demand for innovative solutions that provide accurate decision support and assessments. With this in mind, the EU-funded ARGONAUT project will develop an efficient and user-friendly AI digital tool to calculate the climate and environmental impacts of bio-based products throughout their value chain. Additionally, the project will deliver a decision-support tool to recommend alternative, more sustainable actions and decisions. Through these efforts, it will support small and medium-sized producers while significantly assisting in the implementation of the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation.

Objective

The main objective of ARGONAUT is to develop an effective and easily accessible AI digital tool that accurately calculates the environmental and climate impact from bio-based products across the entire value chain (from cradle to grave) using language models from global literature based on LCA principles and allows for easy and secure tracking through a digital passport based on blockchain technology. This tool will also include a decision support tool that uses this data to map out different alternatives for the value chain and their environmental impact thereby facilitating better and more sustainable decision making.
ARGONAUT will contribute to the integration of key emerging digital technologies (AI and blockchain) and an environmental assessment methodology (LCA) to create a reliable tool able to assist small and medium-sized producers to navigate the complex bio-product landscape with enough relevant information, security guarantees regarding the privacy of their data and in a user-friendly way capable of closing knowledge gaps and thereby of reaching to a wider range of producers.
ARGONAUT will contribute to the implementation of the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation and allow for an accurate depiction of the environmental impact of such bio-based products thereby supporting the development of more sustainable value chains and the transition to a circular bioeconomy across the EU.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
