First of a kind bio n-butanol industrial facility

Project description

Green transition to sustainable petrochemistry

Petroleum is the primary feedstock used in petrochemistry and petrochemical processes across industrial sectors, but it generates significant emissions. The growing demand for green solutions and sustainable transitions has driven many organisations and innovators to develop alternatives in petrochemistry. The EIC-funded RenewChem project will support Catalyxx in constructing a 15 000-tonne-per-year plant and accelerating the scale-up of its technology to help transition the petrochemistry sector. Catalyxx has developed and validated a revolutionary thermochemical catalytic biorefinery technology through 50 000 hours of testing. This technology can convert bioethanol into several high-value, bio-based chemicals. The scaled-up demonstration plant will serve as a showcase to attract investment and promote the adoption of their technology.

Objective

"Catalyxx possesses an innovative, patented thermochemical catalytic biorefinery technology that transforms bioethanol into high-value bio-based chemicals such as bio n-butanol, bio n-hexanol, and bio n-octanol, offering sustainable alternatives to fossil-based feedstocks.

With over a decade of technology development and 50,000 hours of testing leading to TRL7, Catalyxx has demonstrated success with its Demonstrator Plant operating for over 8,000 hours. The next milestone is the construction of the groundbreaking first-of-a-kind (""FOAK"") 15,000 tons per year plant.

Positioned uniquely in the market with sustainable production methods, Catalyxx aims to cater to the rising demand for low-carbon chemicals, providing a cost-competitive and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional methods.

Independent LCA analysis showcases our environmentally friendly approach with a carbon footprint of -1.0 kg CO2 eq/kg butanol compared to 2.5 kg CO2 eq/kg for oxo butanol. Our intermediate chemicals play a pivotal role in decarbonizing downstream value chains.

Support from the EIC is essential to expedite technology scale-up, showcase performance at scale, attract further investment, and facilitate the transition towards sustainable petrochemistry."

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
