Project description
Bioresources-based method for sophisticated hierarchical structures
Aqueous particle dispersions are crucial in everyday products like food and pharmaceuticals. However, developing sustainable and functional colloidal particles remains a challenge. The slow market entry of bio-based alternatives is due to a lack of technologies needed for their industrial use. The ERC-funded PARTIPERSION project will promote findings from the ERC CoG project on hierarchical particles derived from two abundant but often underutilised biopolymers: lignin and hemicelluloses. The project aims to use available bioresources to develop an environmentally friendly method for creating hierarchical structures, specifically hemicellulose-coated lignin particles. The outcomes are expected to lead to advancements in colloid and interface science and contribute to a sustainable utilisation of the Earth’s resources.
Objective
Aqueous particle dispersions are elemental to many aspects of every-day life, from food and pharmaceuticals to construction materials. However, todays dispersion science faces a grand challenge in developing colloidal particles with outstanding functionality in a sustainable manner. To enable societys transformation from oil-based economy to bioeconomy, there is an urgent need to develop sophisticated biocompatible materials, such as particle dispersions, from biomass-derived precursors through sustainable conversion routes. Current bio-based alternatives to synthetic dispersions are entering the market rather slowly, primarily because key technologies to achieve superior functionality to justify industrial adaptation of biobased polymers are lacking. I will promote the findings of my fundamental ERC CoG project on hierarchical particles from two of the most abundant, but underused biopolymers: lignin and hemicelluloses. PARTIPERSION will establish a green route to sophisticated hierarchical architectures - hemicellulose-coated lignin particles - utilizing abundant bioresources. The project will lead to a breakthrough in colloid and interface science and contribute to more sustainable use of Earths resources.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
