Project description
Profiling mpox infection to improve prevention, containment and therapeutics
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is caused by the mpox virus and has symptoms like smallpox. There is currently an mpox epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the number of cases tripling in 2023. The EU-funded MOVIE-TRACE project aims to address this with two studies. The MOVIE study will investigate viral elimination kinetics, providing insights into mpox virus interactions with host tissues and immune defences, essential for containment strategies and therapeutic trial design. The TRACE study will assess secondary attack rates in mpox outbreaks, analysing host susceptibility within specific populations to identify vulnerable groups. This data will guide targeted interventions and inform vaccine efficacy endpoints.
Objective
This proposal outlines two linked studies aimed at addressing the public health challenge of Mpox in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The MOVIE study focuses on understanding the kinetics of viral elimination shedding light on how MPXV interacts with host tissues and immune defences, which is crucial for developing containment strategies and potentially influencing endpoint selection in therapeutic trials.
The TRACE study aims to determine secondary attack rates in MPXV outbreaks, assessing host susceptibility within specific populations, offering vital data to target interventions towards vulnerable groups and informing vaccine efforts by contributing to the assessment of vaccine efficacy endpoints.
