Renormalization Group and Statistical Field Theory

Project description

Renormalisation group arguments for probability and fluid mechanics

Statistical physics, probability, and fluid dynamics are foundational to most fields and sectors, allowing for improved accuracy in studies and methodologies, as well as the development of key solutions and breakthroughs. The ERC-funded ReGroStaFT project aims to develop detailed renormalisation group arguments based on probability and analysis, applying them to problems in probability, fluid mechanics, and statistical physics. The focus is on physical phenomena that exhibit behaviours across various length scales, often showing irregular patterns and diverging correlation lengths. The project will integrate concepts from stochastic homogenisation to gain insights into system behaviours. Additionally, it will research models showing multifractal, intermittent behaviour, or anomalous diffusion, which could lead to significant breakthroughs in several theories.

Objective

This proposed project aims to develop rigorous renormalization group arguments, based on ideas from analysis and probability, and to apply them to problems in statistical physics, probability, and fluid mechanics. The emphasis is on physical phenomena which exhibit behavior across a large range of length scales, often with erratic and irregular behavior on small scales and possibly diverging correlation lengths. The idea is to gradually coarse-grain the system using ideas from the quantitative theory of stochastic homogenization, to obtain a macroscopic description which is simpler and thus more tractable, but also accurately describes the behavior of the system. Models that display anomalous diffusion, intermittent and/or multifractal behavior are of particular interest, examples of which can be found in simplified models of turbulent fluids and Euclidean field theory.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
