Philosophical Recommendations at Central European Arts Faculties in the Late-Middle Ages

Objetivo

Philosophical Recommendations at Central European Arts Faculties in the Late-Middle Ages (PRAISE) offers a new perspective for emerging of the profound connections between the extant teaching practices and the transmission of philosophical ideas in Late-medieval Faculties of Arts. The focus of this project is the recommendations these are celebratory speeches that were delivered by university masters on official occasions and include praise of individuals, such as students graduating from the Faculty of Arts, or of academic subjects, like Philosophy or Theology. Although recommendations were a commonly practice in Late-Medieval universities, their significance has, thus far, been overlooked by scholars. This research project will fill this gap, mapping out the recommendations made at the Faculties of Arts in Prague, Heidelberg, Cologne, Erfurt, Krakow and Vienna (founded within a few years of each other in the late-14th century, these universities share significant similarities in their statutes), with the aim of permitting clearer definition of this new genre. Furthermore, certain selected recommendations also include references to philosophy, philosophers or philosophical doctrines to be studied, which reveal perspectives on the teaching of philosophy as part of the Arts at the time. The project requires a candidate who combines skills in Palaeography and Philology, with knowledge of the Intellectual history of the Universities and the History of philosophy. The project will be supervised by Dr. Ota Pavlek at the Institute of Philosophy of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, and will feature training in intellectual history, as well as in digital humanities (Natural Language Processing). Two major papers will be completed, the first international conference on recommendations will be held in Prague, activity programs will be offered in a number of secondary educational high schools and an informative dedicated website will be created.
