Greening Beyond Borders: Understanding the Role of Supply Chains in Environmental Sustainability

Project description

Building sustainable supply chains

Sustainability in supply chains remains a critical challenge for businesses striving to reduce environmental impacts. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the GREENCHAIN project aims to build a solid foundation for understanding supply chain sustainability. By developing an interdisciplinary framework that combines economics, management, finance, and engineering, the project will explore why and how firms push suppliers to adopt greener practices. It will also identify factors that make firms proactive in sustainability, as well as evaluate the broader effects on the environment, economy, and customers. GREENCHAIN’s findings will equip policymakers and businesses with the tools needed to measure the financial and environmental benefits of sustainable supply chain practices, ultimately helping shape a greener future.

Objective

GREENCHAIN will establish a robust and innovative foundation for advancing our understanding of supply chain sustainability, by 1) developing an interdisciplinary theoretical framework that integrates perspectives from economics, management, finance, operations management, and industrial engineering and 2) establishing empirical frameworks that leverage cutting-edge econometric approaches, novel data sources, and real-world contexts from Europe and Japan. The project will investigate the reasons, mechanisms, and conditions under which firms pressure their suppliers to reduce environmental impacts, identify key characteristics that make firms more proactive in these actions, and assess the broader implications for customers, suppliers, the environment, and the economy. GREENCHAIN's interdisciplinary approach will provide policymakers and businesses with critical insights into the drivers and dynamics of sustainable supply chain practices while equipping them with tools to evaluate the financial and environmental returns of these initiatives. Hosted by the globally renowned IESE Business School and supported by its Sustainability initiatives, I will enhance my abilities in project management, theoretical development, advanced quantitative data analysis, and the communication of research findings – skills essential to establish myself as a leading expert in corporate sustainability management and contribute to both academic discourse and European policy on sustainable supply chains.
