Stochastic Geometry and Novel MAC Schemes for Enhanced Satellite IoT Networks

Project description

Smarter satellite networks for better IoT coverage

The rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) and digital devices has driven demand for faster, more reliable connectivity. Non-geostationary orbit satellites can boost data speeds and coverage, but their use requires complex orbital calculations for safe operation. With support from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the SATNET-IoT project will tackle key challenges in extending IoT connectivity via satellite networks. It will use stochastic geometry to develop a mathematical framework that improves and optimises coverage across regions and times without needing precise orbital data. This framework will be validated and is expected to enhance the efficiency of IoT networks.

Objective

The SATNET-IoT project addresses the significant challenges of extending IoT connectivity through satellite networks, particularly in remote areas where terrestrial coverage is insufficient. With terrestrial networks covering only 25% of the global landmass, satellite-based IoT solutions have become crucial for achieving any-time, any-device connectivity. The rise of non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellites, with their lower latency and improved data transfer speeds, offers promising opportunities for IoT communication. However, performing orbital simulations to know the exact locations of the satellites for each of them is time-consuming and computationally complex. Also, any new solution analysed based on specific satellite orbits cannot be generalized for other constellations. SATNET-IoT aims to utilize stochastic geometry for developing a mathematical framework to analyze the potential improvements in coverage across different regions and times offered by satellite networks, without requiring precise orbital data. The existing IoT communication protocols are also not designed to manage the dynamic, intermittent coverage inherent to satellite networks, nor do they account for the higher propagation delays and rapidly changing topology. SATNET-IoT aims to overcome these challenges by developing novel medium access control (MAC) layer protocols, ensuring efficient transmission scheduling and resource allocation within limited satellite visibility windows. The developed stochastic geometry framework and algorithms will be validated by deploying a real-time IoT network for air quality monitoring using software-defined radio to emulate satellite constellations.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
