Neuromorphic-Native Ultra-Efficient Event-Driven Radio

Objective

The NEUER project aims to revolutionize next-generation wireless communication systems by drawing inspiration from the human brain's energy-efficient processing capabilities. As wireless networks evolve and integrate more advanced AI technologies, the challenge of managing high energy consumption without sacrificing performance becomes increasingly critical. Current solutions struggle to balance these demands, making it difficult to scale these technologies sustainably.
To address this, NEUER will develop a neuromorphic-native communication system that mimics the brain's ability to process information efficiently. By using spiking neural networks (SNNs), which activate only when necessary—similar to how neurons in the brain function—this system will significantly reduce energy consumption while maintaining or even enhancing processing performance in complex signal environments.
The research objective is to achieve at least 50% reduction in energy use, at least 15% reduction in latency, and at least 10% improvement in task accuracy compared to state-of-the-art systems. This will be accomplished by integrating advanced deep learning models that work synergistically within the neuromorphic framework, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in energy-efficient AI-driven communication.
NEUER is not just a step forward in wireless communication; it represents a leap toward more sustainable and intelligent technologies. By bringing brain-inspired efficiency to the field, the project is set to have a broad impact on both academic research and industrial applications, paving the way for the next generation of energy-efficient communication systems.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
