Project description
Using advanced green solvents in real-world applications
The chemical industry is undergoing a green transformation driven by the need for sustainable practices and alignment with circular economy goals. Traditional toxic solvents are a major challenge for the industry, prompting the search for sustainable alternatives. Green solvents, such as ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents and bio-based options offer promising potential, but their use in chemical plant design remains underexplored. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the GreenSolProCon project proposes an innovative framework for designing future biorefinery plants. Researchers will model solvent properties, optimise process efficiency and ensure safe and sustainable chemical processes. By advancing green chemistry, GreenSolProCon should help enable sustainable, commercial-scale biorefineries, setting a new standard for the bio-based industry.
Objective
This project proposes a comprehensive approach to design future biorefinery and biobased chemical plants by integrating green solvent, process, and control design. Green solvents, such as Ionic Liquids (ILs), Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs), and biobased solvents, offer a sustainable alternative to conventional toxic solvents. Despite their potential, their application in chemical process plant design remains underexplored. This project aims to develop a holistic framework that addresses the unique properties of green solvents, focusing on mathematical modeling, solvent regeneration design, dynamic process analysis, control system design, and experimental validation. By advancing green chemistry practices, the project aspires to pave the way for sustainable, commercial-scale biorefinery plants, aligning with the goals of a circular economy and contributing to a green transformation of the chemical industry. The project will model solvent properties, optimize process efficiency, and ensure safe and sustainable chemical processes, ultimately setting a new standard for the biobased industry.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
