Project description
Merging altermagnetism with topological protection for advanced technologies
Magnetic materials have long been classified as either ferromagnets or antiferromagnets, each with distinct properties and limitations. However, the emerging field of altermagnetism challenges this by combining the strengths of both, resulting in entirely new magnetic behaviours. At the same time, topological band theory has transformed understanding of electronic structures, leading to the discovery of new materials (topological insulators and semi-metals). With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the ART.QM project will explore the combination of altermagnetism and topological protection, focusing on how spin degeneracy can be lifted to enable robust spin transport from a material’s bulk to its surface. By uncovering the mechanisms behind these phenomena, the proposed research could significantly impact technologies such as spintronics, quantum computing, neuromorphic computing and superconductivity.
Objective
Topological band theory has revolutionized the understanding of electronic band structure in condensed matter and led to the discovery of novel material classes, such as topological semimetals, topological and magnetic topological insulators. The emerging field of altermagnetism combines the merits of both ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, which were until recently regarded as incompatible. Consequently, they exhibit phenomena unmatched by either of the two traditional magnetic phases. Combining topological protection with altermagnetically lifted spin-degeneracy promises unprecedented robustness and potential mediation of altermagnetic spin-transport properties of bulk to the surface. Understanding the fundamental mechanism of their formation promises far-reaching implications in the fields of spintronics, quantum and neuromorphic computing and superconductivity.
