Project description
A closer look at our solar system’s early history
Understanding our solar system is crucial to physics and astrophysics research, as well as future efforts in space exploration and exploitation. In order to unravel the complexity of its history and formation, detailed research as well as new techniques and discoveries are required. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the TESSIE project will study and analyse chondrules, millimetre-sized particles found in meteorites. It will utilise high-precision isotope analysis of silicon, chromium and magnesium found in chondrules from our solar system. The results will provide crucial insights and advances towards astrophysical models of mass distribution and migration within the protoplanetary disc.
Objective
This project aims to resolve longstanding uncertainties in the early solar system’s history by analyzing chondrules—millimeter-sized particles found in meteorites. Chondrules, formed in the protoplanetary disk that surrounded the young Sun, hold key insights into early solar system evolution and planetary formation. However, discrepancies in the dating of these objects using different chronometric systems have led to debates about their formation timeline. This research will employ high-precision isotope analysis of magnesium, silicon, and chromium in chondrules from both inner and outer solar system meteorites. By examining mass-independent isotopic heterogeneity, the project seeks to refine our understanding of the conditions and processes that shaped the early solar system, ultimately enhancing astrophysical models of mass distribution and migration within the protoplanetary disk.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
