Implementation of Super-resolution Ultrasound Real-time micro-vascular Imaging using Erythrocytes - iSURE

Project description

Commercialising a novel super-resolution ultrasound scanner for microvascular imaging

Based on its previously established methodology, the ERC-funded iSURE project now aims to develop the hardware and software architecture for a novel ultrasound scanner that can execute 3D super-resolution imaging of human microcirculation in real time. This non-invasive method is able to instantaneously generate images of microvascular structures for vessel diameters as small as 28 μm. The project will create a prototype scanner for testing in a medical facility and use the results of numerous clinical trials. It will also prepare documentation to specify the architectural design of the scanner for commercial use, anticipating marketing potential in the form of a spin-out company or a licence agreement with a commercial ultrasound company.

Objective

The Proof-of-Concept project will develop the hardware and software architecture for a novel ultrasound scanner
capable of performing real-time 3-D super-resolution imaging of the microcirculation in humans. The scanner is based on
the methods developed in the SURE ERC synergy grant project for Super-resolution Ultrasound Real-time imaging using
Erythrocytes (SURE). The approach can non-invasively visualize the microvascular structures in the human body for vessel
diameters down to 28 μm from data acquired in just 2 seconds. The results of several clinical studies will be used as a
proof-of-concept, and a prototype scanner with a touch-sensitive graphical interface will be developed and tested in a hospital
environment. Documents will be made specifying the architecture of both the software and the hardware platform for potential
commercial implementation of the approach. This will form the basis for either a potential spin-out company or a license
agreement with a commercial ultrasound company.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
