The initial stream of a urine void.

Project description

Diagnostic and prognostic tool to replace cervical samples in the clinic

For many women, the prospect of having cervical samples taken to screen for cancer is distressing and unpleasant. Some even abstain from regular screening protocols, leaving those at-risk without timely diagnosis and treatment. Meanwhile, non-invasive self-sampling methodologies are gaining wider acceptance. A notable example is the first-void urine (FVU) sample to screen for Human Papillomavirus in women. The ERC-funded FVU project has been developing infection and vaccine models to demonstrate that FVU is an ideal liquid genital tract biopsy to monitor immune response. Ultimately, it aims to illustrate that the FVU sample could be a valuable tool for a range of diagnostic, screening, monitoring and prognostic applications in the field of sexually transmitted infections.

Objective

The ability to easily obtain appropriate and reliable biological samples is critical to advancing life sciences and public/personal health. Having a sample that is non-invasive and can be self-collected at home has major acceptance and implementation advantages. Our team has already demonstrated that first-void urine (FVU) samples can replace clinician-collected cervical samples in Human Papillomavirus (HPV) based cervical cancer screening. Using the initial or first-void urine stream is crucial here. Indeed, the outer layers of the epithelium of the genital tract exfoliate and together with the genital mucus form the utero-cervico-vaginal secretions. This discharge accumulates between the labia minora, around the urethral opening, and is washed away with the FVU upon initiation of urination. The URISAMP project is making good progress to demonstrate that, using HPV infection and vaccination as a model, FVU is indeed an ideal genital tract liquid biopsy to monitor both disease and immune response of women at the site of infection. Importantly, diagnostic, screening, and monitoring applications via FVU samples are growing.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
