deepHelix: a massively scalable, AI-powered peptide drug discovery platform

Project description

AI-driven platform to produce therapeutic peptides

Peptide drugs bridge the gap between small molecules and antibodies, addressing their respective limitations. Small molecules often struggle to target protein-protein interactions (PPIs), while antibodies cannot reach intracellular proteins. The ERC-funded deepHelix project aims to develop an AI-driven experimental platform for designing therapeutic peptides composed entirely of natural amino acids and capable of permeating cell membranes. This platform will facilitate the rapid discovery of cost-effective, stable, cell-permeable, and high-affinity peptide binders. These binders can serve as research tools, diagnostic agents, and therapeutics for intracellular proteins previously considered undruggable.

Objective

Peptide drugs potentially address limitations of both small molecules and antibodies. Small molecules struggle to target protein-protein interactions (PPIs), while antibodies cannot access intracellular proteins. In this project we will develop an AI-driven experimental platform to produce cell-permeable therapeutic peptides made entirely of natural amino acids. The platform will allow the rapid discovery of cost-effective, stable, cell-permeable, and high-affinity peptide binders for use as research tools, in diagnostics, and as therapeutics against intracellular proteins previously considered undruggable targets.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

FUNDACIO CENTRE DE REGULACIO GENOMICA
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
