Flexible and Efficient Capture and Bioconversion of CO2 to Materials and Ingredients

Project description

Turning CO2 into a valuable resource

CO2 emissions are a challenge for both the climate and industry, calling for smart, sustainable solutions. In this context, the EU-funded UNICO2RN project will turn biogenic CO2 into useful products. It combines advanced metal-organic frameworks for capturing and purifying CO2 with biotechnology using hydrogen-oxidising bacteria. The result: flexible, modular systems that can adapt to different CO2 sources. These systems are being tested in real industrial settings to produce microbial proteins and biodegradable plastics (PHA). By bringing these technologies closer to market, UNICO2RN aims to reduce emissions, improve safety and efficiency, and support greener industry, linking climate action with economic opportunity.

Objective

The UNICO2RN project aims to demonstrate novel routes to convert biogenic CO2 into ingredients and materials, involving metal organic framework-based capture and purification technology and biotechnological processes based on Hydrogen Oxidizing Bacteria. The modularity and flexibility of the developed processes will be shown through 2 demonstration cases in real industrial settings at TRL 7 for sustainable and efficient production of microbial proteins and PHA, from 2 types of biogenic CO2 sources of different concentration and purity. These new routes bring clear advantages in terms of efficiency, safety, environmental footprint and greenhouse gas emission reductions with respect to benchmarks. Their development to TRL7 will enable their industrialization and thus lead to major positive economic, environmental and social/societal impacts.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
