ARISE - Advanced RNA Inhalation Solutions anchored in Evolved dry powder technology.

Project description

RNAi-based drug candidate for allergic asthmas

A major challenge in respiratory RNA delivery is finding an effective method to deliver RNA to the lung. Although several RNA therapeutics are currently in clinical trials for pulmonary diseases, none have yet received regulatory approval. Nano-embedded in-microparticles, or NEMs, offer a groundbreaking solution, encapsulating therapeutic RNA in lipid nanoparticles, which are then processed into an inhalable dry powder. This approach aligns with RNhale’s dual business model: developing in-house drug candidates and offering access to its RNA formulation platform through collaborative R&D partnerships. RNhale and the EIC-funded ARISE project will advance an RNAi-based drug candidate for treating moderate to severe allergic asthma. At the same time, scaling the manufacturing process for RNA-loaded dry powders will play a vital role in enabling commercialisation.

Objective

One of the main challenges in the domain of respiratory RNA delivery has been administration. Today, while 15 RNA therapeutics are
undergoing clinical trials for pulmonary diseases, none has yet secured regulatory approval. Our nano-embedded microparticles
(NEMs) represent a disruptive approach and paradigm shift in the field of RNA therapeutics for the treatment pulmonary diseases. Our
IP-protected NEM technology comprises therapeutic RNA, which is encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) and formulated as an
inhalable dry powder. This innovation builds the foundation to RNhale's two-pronged business concept: in-house drug development
and RNA formulation in R&D partnerships. In brief, we have developed a standalone approach, pioneering an RNAi-based drug
candidate for the treatment of moderate and severe allergic asthma. Additionally, our scalable, and indication independent
production technology of RNA-loaded dry powders will be a second mainstay of our commercialization strategy.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
